2019 Bayer AgVocacy at Commodity Classic

Cindy Zimmerman

Bayer had a lot going on at Commodity Classic this year.

Kicking off with the pre-Classic AgVocacy Forum, Bayer had more experts than ever on a greater variety of topics since the integration with Monsanto last year. The Forum offered insights on trade, technology, the future of food and grower perspectives, as well as a chance to hear from Bayer executives Bob Reiter and Lisa Safarian.

On the Commodity Classic trade show floor, Bayer was spread out to encompass brands such as Channel, DEKALB Asgrow, and The Climate Corporation.

In addition, Bayer held a learning session on how Integrated Weed Management pays off. Moderator Arlene Cotie with Bayer discussed the topic with panelists Chad Leman, Farmer from Eureka, Ill.; Jason Norsworthy, Professor in Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences Department, University of Arkansas; Bill Chism, Senior Biologist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Listen to and/or watch it below.

You can find all of the content – 223 photos, 27 audio files, and one video – on the AgNewsWire Bayer AgVocacy virtual newsroom.

  • The 2019 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) had a terrific year with 32,931 poultry, meat and animal food industry leaders from all over the world in attendance, setting a new record. There were also 1,426 exhibitors with 600,732 square feet of exhibit space, two more records. The Expo is the world’s largest annual feed, meat and poultry industry event of its kind and is one of the 30 largest trade shows in the United States. IPPE is sponsored by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, American Feed Industry Association and North American Meat Institute.
  • The American Poultry Historical Society added five inductees into the Poultry Industry Hall of Fame for 2019. They include Earl Benjamin, D. W. Brooks, Mark Cook, Abit Massey and Jim Perdue. The induction ceremony was held at the International Production & Processing Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

Congressmen Visit Farm and Gin Show

Cindy Zimmerman

Rep. David Kustoff (R-TN)

Two U.S. Congressmen from cotton growing areas visited the Mid-South Farm and Gin Show on Friday to meet with constituents and show their appreciation for the farmers in their districts.

Rep. David Kustoff is a Republican from the 8th district of Tennessee, which includes Memphis where the show has been held for 67 years and much of the western part of the state’s cotton growing region.

Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO)

Rep. Jason Smith, also a Republican, represents the bootheel of Missouri, where virtually all of the cotton is grown in the state. He was raised in Salem, Missouri, where he still owns the same family farm that was started by his great grandfather.

Both of the Congressmen briefly addressed the update session of the show, but were mainly just there to meet and greet the cotton-growing farm families in the Mid South.

Where’s the Content?

Cindy Zimmerman

ZimmComm had a crazy week of content creation – from Destin, Florida and the BASF Stoneville Legacy Club, to the Bayer AgVocacy Forum, the BASF Science Behind, and Commodity Classic in Orlando, and the Mid-South Farm and Gin Show in Memphis. If you are looking for it all, it’s being posted on the virtual newsroom for agriculture AgNewsWire.

Sometimes we gather content faster than we can get edited and posted, and that has definitely been the case this week. Add to that the fact that the Orlando Convention Center where Commodity Classic was held could not seem to provide the media room with decent internet access and we are running a little behind. All I can say is that I am glad it was Chuck at Classic this year and not me!

Here are direct links to the AgNewsWire newsrooms for each event where links to photo albums, audio and video are being posted:

Secretary Sonny Shines at Commodity Classic

Cindy Zimmerman

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue visited the 2019 Commodity Classic Friday and addressed most of the major issues being discussed at the big annual meeting of corn, soybean, wheat and sorghum farmers.

Perdue talked about the farm economy, farm bill implementation, ethanol, and a lot about trade. He also addressed many of the same issues during a press conference with the many members of the farm media in attendance.

Here are links to both for your listening and downloading pleasure.

BASF Unveils the Future of Fungicides

Cindy Zimmerman

BASF unveiled its latest fungicide called Revysol during its annual pre-Commodity Classic Science Behind event on Wednesday.

The new triazole is a DeMethylation Inhibitor (DMI) fungicide that BASF plans to label for more than a dozen crops, using the brand name Veltyma for corn and Revytek for soybeans. EPA registration for Revysol is expected to be finalized this summer.

Get the details in the presentations from the Science Behind event from BASF Product AI Manager Matt Bradley and Technical Marketing Manager Paula Halabicki.

Veris Unveils Tillage and Planter Mounted Soil Sensors

Cindy Zimmerman

At the 2019 Commodity Classic in Orlando this week, Veris Technologies is introducing iScan+, the first real-time sensor suite that measures four critical soil features while planting or tilling.

Eric Lund, president of Veris Technologies, says the iScan+ optimizes implement adjustments and warns against yield robbing mistakes with real-time insight into changing soil conditions. All while providing high-resolution soil mapping for long term precision ag zones.

“Manufacturers are giving growers more options to adjust implements to improve equipment operation and crop performance,” said Lund. “Without high quality soil information these infield adjustment features are underutilized and can be erroneous.”

The iScan+ platform deploys four unique sensing modules adapted from Veris’ proven and patented line of soil sensors:

Moisture: Moisture affects seed germination, emergence, root-inhibiting compaction, and overall seedbed quality. The iScan+ gives growers immediate feedback as moisture changes across the field. By harnessing the gold standard of moisture measurements, the iScan’s capacitance sensing technology guarantees planters and tillage tools have the information needed to optimize adjustments for varying moisture conditions.

Temperature: Even when a planter drops seed into ideal moisture and a smooth seedbed, low soil temperature can cause damage during this crucial time. A key benefit of the iScan+ is its ability to inform planting decisions even before the planter hits a field by mounting to the seedbed preparation tool. When attached to a planter it has the flexibility to measure temperature and moisture above and below the current seed drop.

CEC: It’s easy to lose sight of the importance of the soil’s physical structure when adjusting tillage tools. However, wet clay soil compacts differently than wet silt soil. That’s why Veris has combined the moisture sensor module with soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) readings. This fused data feed can help avoid stunted plants caused by sidewall and seedbed compaction. Veris soil CEC readings are gathered by measuring the electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil. Because the electrical current travels two feet into the rooting zone, these readings provide soil depth and water-holding capacity information that has significant implications on management decisions.

Organic Matter (OM): Whether creating variable rate seeding prescriptions, guiding fertility sampling or improving nitrogen management, Veris OM readings give growers the power to manage each yield environment accurately. The robust but small module that houses the Infrared and Red light sensors is designed to resist breakage and mud sticking to the optical window.

Learn more about iScan+ on the Veris website or stop by and visit them at Commodity Classic this week.
