Chuck Zimmerman

1982B982-64B5-4C27-88CC405995D3C050The MyJohnDeere.com platform has now become integrated with iCropTrak. This even includes the use of Dropbox.

Mobile Field and Farm App iCropTrak just announced their integration of the new John Deere wireless connection technology MyJohnDeere.com and DropBox in iCropTrak Version 4.0 for 2014. These technologies will allow for seamless movement of data between your Deere tractor, your iCropTrak enabled iPad and DropBox enabled clients, labs and consultants like never before.

iCropTrak is a mobile farm data management system that combines a customizable collaborative iOS mobile app, a private cloud database and 3rd party connections like MyJohnDeere.com and DropBox. It is designed to effortlessly collect soil samples, scout and document farm efforts including tracking people and equipment.

iCropTrak was the first to have a soil sampling iOS app, first to have a farm management app on iPad, and now we’re innovating to make farming easier, smarter, and more informative by interfacing MyJohnDeere.com, Dropbox, and a number of 3rd party web systems in 2014.

AFBF Convention Social Communicating

Cindy Zimmerman

2014 AFBF ConventionAn estimated 7,000 farm and ranch leaders from around the country are heading to San Antonio this weekend for the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 95th Annual Convention (Twitter hashtag #AFBF14). The meeting begins January 12 and runs through January 15 in San Antonio. Numerous speakers will be on hand to address topics, ranging from crop and livestock outlooks to farm policy, trade and technology.

ZimmCast 422If you are not one of those 7,000 – never fear! – you can feel like you are part of the action thanks to all the social media and new communications tools the great team at AFBF is using to get information out from the annual meeting. It’s a far cry from when we covered the 1985 convention in Hawaii without even the benefit of computers!

I talked with AFBF Executive Director of Communications Mace Thornton about all the tweeting, Facebooking, blogging, Flickring, and live streaming that will be going on from the convention. Social Communication from AFBF Convention

A Very Glassy Look

Chuck Zimmerman

Chuck's ZimmGlassIt’s time to hit the agriblogging highway and ZimmGlass will be going with me. I’ll be trying to figure out the best ways to incorporate it into my coverage of ag events starting with the American Farm Bureau Federation convention in San Antonio.

This morning I did my first live video chat via Hangouts and will probably do some impromptu Hangouts during the convention. Maybe I’ll see you there. One of the things I learned this morning was how important it is to talk to your Glass the way Glass wants you to talk to it. It was more responsive to a slower speech pace for example.

I’m going to wear it on the way to San Antonio to see what kind of reactions I get from TSA and the U.S. airport population. If it gets interesting I’ll share here and on social media. You can count on that.

2014 Golden ARC Award Deadline Approaching

Jamie Johansen

golden-arc-awardsThe Agricultural Relations Council (ARC) has issued a “call for entries” for the 2014 Golden ARC Awards. The competition includes 35 categories for agricultural public relations activities conducted in full or partially in the year 2013.

All entires are due to contest headquarters on or before February 28th. Get on the ball and have your entires postmarked by January 31st and receive a $25 discount per entry. Members and non-members are invited to compete. Entry fee for the first entry for non-ARC members is $350 and includes a membership fee. Additional entires are $150 each if received on or before the early bird deadline.

The format and requirements for the Golden ARC Awards are similar to other leading PR award programs, based on best practices for public relations and public affairs campaigns and tactics.

The 35 categories fall into two divisions – Campaigns and Tactics. A student category is available with a free entry to student ARC members. New for this year, the tactics categories have been restructured to better reflect the tactical entries entered. The Golden ARC de Excellence award for the best all-around entry in the campaigns division will also be awarded.

Winners receive their honors at the ARC annual meeting held June 24-26, 2014 in Madison, WI.

The Golden ARC Awards Program began in 1990 and came to be recognized as the most esteemed award in the agricultural public relations industry. The restructured contest reflects the many hats worn by today’s PR practitioner. The categories recognize everything from full campaigns to tactics such as media relations and innovative new uses of social media. Thune: Farm Bill Closer to Finish Line

Cindy Zimmerman

thune-thumbSenator John Thune (R-SD) believes a farm bill is “getting closer to the finish line” but he still has concerns about aspects of it.

“Particularly the lack of reform in the commodity title of the bill, I think that’s a real missed opportunity,” said Thune during a press call with reporters this week.

Thune voted against the farm bill that passed the Senate last year because it “relies on high fixed target prices set in statute by Congress which is very far afield from the market-oriented reforms” that he hoped would be in the bill.

The South Dakota senator is particularly concerned about getting a bill quickly to get assistance for producers in his state who lost livestock during the October blizzard. He hopes to see a farm bill on the floor next week.

HumaneWatch Cat Says WTF HSUS

Chuck Zimmerman

HumaneWatch BillboardTalk about some great publicity exposing the “real” Humane Society of the United States. HumaneWatch has done it again. Remember to give to your local animal shelter!

As part of its ongoing campaign to expose the deceptive fundraising practices of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), yesterday HumaneWatch.org, a project of the Center for Consumer Freedom, launched a billboard in Times Square calling attention to a little-known fact: Despite its commercials and fundraising materials featuring sad-looking puppies and kittens, HSUS gives only one percent of its $120 million budget to support local pet shelters.

The billboard (viewable here) is located in Times Square at Broadway and 46th Street.

The ad features a picture of an angry-looking cat with the headline, “WTF? (Where’s The Funding?),” and goes on to explain, “The Humane Society of the United States only gives 1% of its budget to local pet shelters.” The ad concludes by prompting viewers, “Find Out About the Deception At: HumaneWatch.org.” Read More

2016 Will be International Year of Pulses

Chuck Zimmerman

USA Dry Pea & Lentil CouncilWe’re not talking about your heart here. We’re talking about I Heart Pulse Crops. Well, at least the United Nations has by voting voting to declare 2016 as the “International Year of Pulses.” The American Pulse Association has responded.

“Pulse” is a term describing the edible seeds of several leguminous plants, such as dry beans, dry peas, lentils and chickpeas.

“These are exciting times for the pulse crop industry, both nationally and internationally,” declared Tim McGreevy, CEO of the American Pulse Association. The APA is a partnership between the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council and the US Dry Bean Council to promote the health, nutrition and sustainability of pulse crops. “Pulses have been a nutritious part of the international diet for centuries. The United States has only just begun to tap into the healthy benefits of these crops,” McGreevy added.

Pulses have steadily increased in popularity as people around the world recognize their appeal as nutritious, versatile foods that can play an essential part in healthy diets.

Mixed Results on New Health Insurance Plan

Jamie Johansen

New Holland ZimmPollOur latest ZimmPoll asked the question, “How is your health insurance for 2014?”

We had a pretty low voter turn out for this ZimmPoll. It may be due to the holidays, but I’m thinking it might be due to confusion. Most people probably still haven’t figured out how their personal health insurance plans will change, if they will change and what it will cost them. I am one of the lucky ones and my insurance won’t be changing.

Our poll results:

  • Lower cost, better benefits – 23%
  • No change – 23%
  • Other-Higher costs, same benefits – 23%
  • Higher cost, better benefits – 15%
  • Higher cost, less benefits – 8%
  • Can’t figure it out yet – 8%

Our new ZimmPoll is now live and asks the question, “Would you wear Google Glass?”

Chuck has been flaunting his new toy around quite a bit lately. This toy being Google Glass. I asked when I would be receiving mine, but was quickly informed that because he is part of Google’s beta test, only one is allotted per company. That means I will have to wait along with the rest of the population. Chuck has deemed his the ZimmGlass and has been experimenting with ways he can use it out on the agriblogging highway. Does this new technology have a place in agriculture? Can you see yourself wearing this computer on your face while out in public? Tell us what you think!
