ZimmCast 685 – Cattle Industry Convention

Chuck Zimmerman

ZimmCastHello and welcome to the ZimmCast. I’m Chuck Zimmerman.

Last week I traveled to Houston for the annual Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show. We produced a customized virtual newsroom for NCBA on AgNewsWire.com. It is loaded with content including photos, interviews and session audio that is all available all media.

In this week’s episode I’m going to feature some of my interviews. Included are now-past NCBA president Jerry Bohn and new president Don Schiefelbein. They each bring their perspective to the last year and the year ahead. Also in this week’s program you’ll hear from NCBA staff members CEO Colin Woodall and VP of Government Affairs, Ethan Lane. A very well attended each year is the Cattlefax Outlook. Afterward I spoke with Cattlefax VP of Industry Relations and Analysis to get a summary of what the outlook is for the cattle industry. Finally, I thought you might enjoy hearing Markie Hageman who received the Beef Advocacy Program Advocate of the Year.

It was a great conference. Like in Florida, there were no mask requirements or other ones. Over 6,000 people had a great time and that is the way I’d like to see all conferences from now on. No good reason not to.

This week I’ll be back on the agriblogging highway to the Crop Insurance and Reinsurance Bureau annual meeting near Palm Springs, CA. See you from there.

So, that’s the ZimmCast for this week. I hope you like it and thank you for listening.

USDA to Invest $1 Billion in Climate Smart Commodities

Cindy Zimmerman

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was in Jefferson City, Missouri yesterday to announce $1 billion in partnerships to support America’s climate-smart farmers, ranchers and forest landowners.

The new Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities opportunity will finance pilot projects that create market opportunities for U.S. agricultural and forestry products that use climate-smart practices and include innovative, cost-effective ways to measure and verify greenhouse gas benefits. USDA is now accepting project applications for fiscal year 2022.

“Now, this program is not a carbon market program. It’s focused on commodity production,” said Vilsack. “And working alongside some of the great activity that we’re already seeing out in the market. We’re hopeful that we’ll see additional adoption of climate-smart practices across all regions of the country and all commodity types for those producers by themselves or their partner to obtain those private sector markets, another revenue source if you will, for farmers.”

Find Your Blueprint® for Beef Production

Cindy Zimmerman

Andy Schwab, Northern Ag Network, interviews Neil Bumgarner at #CattleCon22

What if you supplemented your cattle with only organic trace minerals?

That was the question Alltech set out to answer a few years ago and the result is Blueprint®, a supplementation program designed to target animal health and performance and help build upon the genetic potential at each stage of an animal’s life cycle. The program is formulated with Alltech’s Total Replacement Technology™, which consists of organic trace minerals that support absorption, retention, and utilization in beef cattle.

Neil Bumgarner is Blueprint® Program Manager for Alltech Feed Division in the U.S., working with Hubbard Feeds and Ridley through CRYSTALYX®, and he was talking about Blueprint at last week’s Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show.

In this interview, he explains what Blueprint is and the benefits it provides.

Trailblazers and Beef Advocates

Cindy Zimmerman

Speaking of beef, Markie Hageman was selected as the 2021 Beef Advocate of the Year and also named as one of the very first industry Trailblazers.

The Advocate of the Year award, given by the Beef Checkoff-funded Masters of Beef Advocacy (MBA) program, recognizes one outstanding beef advocate for their efforts in educating consumers about cattle and beef. Hageman was selected for her success in creating social media content that highlights the benefits of beef production, the cattle industry and what it’s like being a first-generation rancher in California.

She is also one of ten beef community spokespeople chosen through a competitive application process for the industry’s new Trailblazers program, developed by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), a contractor to the Beef Checkoff. Chandler Mulvaney, NCBA director of grassroots advocacy & spokesperson development, says the Trailblazers will receive specialized training to serve as industry spokespeople and inform beef advocates at the local and state levels on advocacy, media and spokesperson best practices. Every year new Trailblazers will be accepted into the program.

Listen to interviews from the 2022 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show last week with both Hageman and Mulvaney.

Heil Sound, Makers of ZimmComm Gold Mics, Changes Owners

Chuck Zimmerman

Heil SoundHeil Sound, makers of the famous Golden ZimmComm Microphone, have transferred ownership from the founder and his wife. I have had the fortune to talk with Bob Heil about the model PR 20 microphones. He was intrigued by the fact that we use them to interview farmers and all kinds of people involved in agribusiness around the world.

Heil Sound, the Fairview Heights, Illinois-based manufacturer of professional microphones, has announced the successful transfer of ownership from Bob and Sarah Heil to current President and CEO, Ash Levitt, and Director of Operations, Steve Warford. Sarah Heil has retired, but Bob will continue to do outreach work and product design within the amateur radio space under the title Founder and CEO Emeritus.

Gold Heil PR 20When discussing the transition, Heil said, “My life has been about achieving great sound, whether on the concert stage or in the amateur radio world. I’ve watched Heil Sound go from a regional sound company to a world-class microphone manufacturer. This company has been my passion but it is time for me to step aside. There is no better team to carry the company forward than Ash and Steve, and I have the utmost confidence in them.”

We wish Bob and his wife all the best. Their microphones have been used to conduct thousands of interviews over the years. If you have been interviewed by us then you are a member of the ZimmComm Golden Mic Club, a special group that includes U.S. Secretaries of Agriculture, global company CEOs and farmers of all commodities.

Two people are responsible for our choice in using this microphone and especially the gold color (a special edition). Steve Mays, who I worked with at Learfield Communications mentioned them to me and Tom Slunecka, Minnesota Soybeans, coined the Golden ZimmComm Microphone name. Here’s a big thank you to both of them for what has been one of the best equipment decisions we’ve made.

Preview of the 2022 CIRB Annual Meeting

Cindy Zimmerman

The 58th Crop Insurance and Reinsurance Bureau (CIRB) Annual Meeting is coming up this week, February 9-11, at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells, CA.

CIRB Executive Vice President Mike Torrey says everyone will be happy to be in person again after having a virtual meeting last year. “Because it’s been so long since we’ve been together, a lot happened in the market place and in the ag economy,” said Torrey. “The theme of this is Resilience and everything is going to be geared around these challenges.”

Founded in 1964 and headquartered on Capitol Hill, CIRB offers advocacy, support and membership services to the crop insurance and reinsurance community, and coordinates the Crop Insurance Coalition, which Torrey says has proven to be helpful over the past two years with limited access to lawmakers in Washington DC. “When it was built, nobody knew something like COVID would happen,” Torrey said. “But the coalition has allowed the industry to continue to have the means to educate new members of Congress.”
