The Nufarm NAFTA Headquarters

Chuck Zimmerman

Brian Rund NufarmFarm media getting to tour the Nufarm and Nuseed headquarters in Alsip, IL got a nice break in the winter weather yesterday. It was a little windy but then what do you expect from Chicago? We were given an office area tour from Brian Rund, Director of Branding & Marketing Services. The facility Nufarm took over previously housed a glass/window manufacturing company and Brian says they took advantage of all the glass when remodeling. For example, the ceiling to floor windows throughout the office areas depict the various crop types that Nufarm focuses on. Another interesting change was in the kitchen/eating area. Since this was and still is a combination manufacturing and office facility the previous owners had separate side by side areas for office workers to eat and the factory workers. One of the first things Nufarm did was “tear down that wall.” The culture of Nufarm includes the fact that everyone is part of the same team/family. I like that.

Update on PRRS Diagnostic Testing

Jamie Johansen

BI-PRRS-13-37-editedAs part of the 2013 North American PRRS Symposium, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health hosted the BIVI PRRS ARC&E Seminar. It was a morning full of experts discussing PRRS Area Regional Control, as well as what is being done in the field.

The morning started off with Dr. Rodger Main, Director of the Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory at Iowa State University. He provided the audience with an update on current PRRS diagnostic testing.

“The field of PRRS diagnostics has continued to evolve and continue to mature. The point I wanted to get across is the continuous improvement in the assays themselves, the processes that happen at the laboratory and the cooperative nature of our clients that has really improved the overall state of PRRS diagnostics in North America.”

Dr. Main also discussed the use of oral fluids as diagnostic specimens, the use of premise ID and affiliate codes and other improvements the lab has taken to tackle the PRRS virus.

“In the field of PRRS diagnostics there has been substantial improvements over the past five years. All the primary assays that we are using today in the laboratory are all new and different, as well as a number of the key methods and processes that are occurring in the laboratory itself. PRRS has been around for a long time and I think that we would like folks to know that it continues to evolve and improve and it all begins with the client. One of the big things going forward will be around how we enhance our information management systems on both the front and back ends of the diagnostic process.”

Seed Treatment in Modern Crop Production

Chuck Zimmerman

CropLife FoundationAt the end of last week Croplife Foundation released a new report, “The Role of Seed Treatment in Modern U.S. Crop Production.” The report contains extensive information on the benefits of seed treatment for growers, consumers and the environment. Some of the topics covered in the report include:

Grower benefits – Seed treatments offer effective control against early-season pests and diseases, and reduce the need for additional rescue treatments or replanting.

Added value to seed – Seed treatment protects and contributes value to a large proportion of seed that has been enhanced through agricultural technologies.

Positive environmental impacts – Crop protection products applied as seed treatments can reduce soil surface exposure by up to 90 percent compared to other application methods.

Economic impacts – Through increased protection and greater crop yields, seed treatments helped contribute to nearly $80 billion worth of value to American corn growers in 2011.

The CropLife Foundation held a press conference with these speakers:

Jay Vroom, chair, CropLife Foundation board of directors and president and CEO, CropLife America; Andrew W. LaVigne, president and CEO, American Seed Trade Association; Tim Burrack, Iowa farmer and vice chair of the board of directors, Truth about Trade & Technology.

Gemperle Farms Introduces Kid-Friendly Video Series

Jamie Johansen

eggsGemperle Family Farms has launched an online video series to showcase egg-related crafts, recipes and science experiments, and to provide a behind-the-scenes look at farm life.

“At our Gemperle Chicken Ranch, we think it’s important to educate customers on what makes Gemperle Eggs special while having fun at the same time,” explained Gemperle Family Farms President Steve Gemperle. “These videos take an egg and transform it from a kitchen staple into an interesting and engaging science experiment, recipe or craft.”

All the videos highlight Gemperle chickens and eggs, ranging from explaining Egg-o-Nomics, to showcasing the Gemperle family’s dedication to happy and healthy chickens. For example, the kid-produced Bouncy Egg video uses Gemperle eggs to show kids how science can transform an egg into a rubber toy. There are already more than a dozen videos available and more added monthly.

In support of the new video series, Gemperle Farms is hosting an online contest, “Holiday Video Viewing.” Contestants are invited to watch educational and entertaining child-friendly videos on the website for a chance to win one of three fabulous prizes.

AgMazing 500 Receives Farm Bureau Award

Jamie Johansen

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 9.41.22 AMMembers from Cook, Marshall-Putnam and Randolph counties are among 24 County Activities of Excellence (CAE) Program winners chosen from 123 national entries. This is the second straight year for Illinois Farm Bureau to have three CAE winners. The CAE program acknowledges and shares successful county Farm Bureau programs and activities focusing on education and ag promotion, member services, public relations and information, leadership development and policy implementation.

The award winners displayed their programs at the Illinois Farm Bureau annual meeting in Chicago Dec. 7-10. They will reprise their role in January at the American Farm Bureau Federation annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Randolph Country members hosted the AgMazing 500 Congressional Tour and Reception, August 21-23, 2013. Traveling 187 miles to six locations with the help of 42 volunteers in three days translated into an “agmazing” adventure for 15 Congressional staff from four states hosted by Randolph County members. Legislative staff learned firsthand about grain handling and fertilizer facilities, beverage manufacturing, farming and Mississippi River transportation issues. Participants formed five teams of bipartisan members to daily compete in Amazing Race-style games, providing them an opportunity to build lasting friendships. Randolph County members believe the event helped them build stronger relationships with legislative staff members and empowered staffers to be a voice for agriculture in Congress.

Ryan Ford, Manager of the Randolph County Farm Bureau, accepted the award in Chicago and will also in San Antonio. He deserves a big pat on the back for his commitment and efforts with this event.

Vicki’s Wicked Potions

Chuck Zimmerman

ZimmCast 420I recently mentioned a wonderful bloody mary mix that paired well with Organic Ocean Vodka. It’s called Bloody Brew by Vicki’s Wicked Potions in Pensacola, FL. It is good stuff. Good enough that I went back to Palafox Market on Saturday to pick up a case!

Randy & Vicki ComptonVicki’s Wicked Potions is owned and brewed by Randy & Vicki Compton, seen here in their booth with another customer making a large purchase. I spent a while getting to know them and thought you might enjoy our conversation to learn about how they got into this enterprise and especially what’s in Bloody Brew.

Randy says that he and Vicki have invested a lot of money in the consumption of bloody marys over the years and they thought it was time for bloody marys to pay them back. Besides Bloody Brew they specialize in creole spiced pickled vegetables. Randy says, “We’re known to bring a tear to your eye.” One of the pickled vegetable options includes garnishes for bloody marys! If you want to learn more and perhaps figure out how to get a supply of your own just send Randy an email.
