A Tradition of Healthy Competition at NFMS

Chuck Zimmerman

nfms-14-butch-kriegerDuring this year’s National Farm Machinery Show crowds gathered from across the country to watch the Championship Tractor Pull. The best tractors from across the United States competed in the coveted 2014 event and Chuck chatted with one of the announcers Butch Krieger.

“This is my 35th year here in Louisville. It just gets better every year. The competition is great and the tractor pull committee does a great job deciding who is going to come here. I don’t think if I had even an opportunity that I could put it together as well as they do.”

Butch is pictured on right with another announcer, Dave Bennett. Butch goes on to explain how this pull is held inside with a huge smoke machine that captures all the exhaust that the tractors produce. Freedom Hall is also equipped with heavy exhaust fans throughout the large arena.

Syngenta has served as a huge sponsor for the event for years and drivers were present during the show to sign autographs at their booth. Butch shared he understands it’s hard to get tickets to the Saturday night pull, but says that throughout the week tickets are available to see some of the best tractors from across the nation compete.

New Holland Compact Tractors

Chuck Zimmerman

New Holland Boomer 37The New Holland Boomer Tractors may look small next to their big brothers but they are not a toy. These machines can handle a lot of work from hauling dirt and mulch to removing snow. They also have all the implements available you could possibly need.

At the National Farm Machinery Show I walked around with New Holland’s Dan Valen as he describes the machines on display including the new Boomer 37 model. Watch and learn.

United Soybean Board Director at NFMS

Anna Leigh Peek

Winters USBThe Kentucky Soybean Board had a booth at the National Farm Machinery Show last week and I had the opportunity to stop by and visit with Doug Winter, a Kentucky grower who serves as a director on the United Soybean Board (USB).

Winters has been busy with his role on the board for the Center of Food Integrity and his work as the International Lead with the Freedom to Operate Group at USB.

I asked him about the report from USDA last week that farm income is expected to be down 26% in 2014. “I think the American farmer will have to sharpen his pencil a little bit more this year” said Winter. “After you have ridden the roller coaster a few times you start to realize you cannot put too much stock in $16 corn and $8 soybeans, because it will change.”

Wild Florida Gators

Chuck Zimmerman

GatorsHow about them Gators? Of course I’m talking about that University of Florida men’s basketball team. This morning Cindy went out on the Wild Florida trip while I took photos at the National Ethanol Conference golf tournament.

She saw real gators, in the wild. There was a gator in one of the golf course ponds though.

So, we’re enjoying some warm sunshine for a change after weeks of pretty cold meetings. This is why we moved back to Florida!

New Holland Brand Marketing Manager

Chuck Zimmerman

ZimmCast 428There’s a new Brand Marketing Communications Manager in town. In New Holland, PA that is. She’s Dawn Pelon and you’ll be seeing her out and about representing the New Holland brand this year. I sat down with Dawn during last week’s National Farm Machinery Show and recorded our conversation for this week’s program.

New HollandI know it’s hard to believe but somehow I never got a photo of Dawn at the show. So, instead, I offer this cute baby blogging photo.

Dawn has been on the job for just over three months. Her background is in automotive and heavy equipment and working with dealer networks. She fits right in with the new team at New Holland and is excited about the opportunity to move the New Holland brand forward. She did her homework before starting too by looking over stories about the New Holland brand in the past and thinking about how to bring it into the future. One of those ways is with New Holland Smart Stories.

You can listen to this week’s program to get to know Dawn better here. New Holland Dawn Pelon

Cooking Up Something Good

Jamie Johansen

farming_our_future_large-cropperdThe Farm to Chef Success workshop will be offered at the Farming Our Future conference Saturday, February 22, 2014. The Farm to Chef model is thriving, and diners love it. But for farmer and chef, it takes a lot of back-and-forth to build a productive relationship.

Panel members include Chef Hugh Horner, The Restaurant at Helsinki Hudson, Chef Serge Madikians, Serevan Restaurant, Proprietor Nancy Thomas, Mezze Bistro + Bar and Allium Bistro + Bar, Katie Bogdanffy – Third generation farmer and founder of Yellow Bell Farm and will be moderated by Ginsberg’s VP of Operations, John Brusie.

Discussion will include what chefs and owners want and what farmers can realistically provide. Along with how can chefs and farmers make partnerships work and does what chefs ask for dictate what farmers grow.

Conference co-chair Steve Hadcock of Cornell Cooperative Extension says “This is a workshop designed for farmers who want to sell to restaurants, chefs who want more local menu options, and restaurateurs who want to showcase local farm connections. And of course for foodies who want to know how it all happens.”

The third-annual Farming Our Future conference will bring together a diverse audience from the community, including established farmers, beginning farmers, interested non-farmers, suppliers, educators, community leaders, industry leaders, and students. The conference’s theme, succession, refers to farmers handing the reins to the next generation, or to the next farmers, and a special keynote speech will relate succession stories from the Hudson Valley and the Tri-State region. Besides the farm-to-chef offering, other workshops will cover succession planning, bee-keeping, farmer-training programs, and vital skills training for new farmers.

An 8am Legislators’ Roundtable will feature Congressman Chris Gibson and New York State Assemblymembers Didi Barrett and Peter Lopez, along with State Senators Kathleen Marchione and Terry Gipson, as well as several local officials, providing a unique opportunity for agriculture-related dialogue.

Ginsberg’s Foods is the conference Platinum Sponsor. Gold Sponsors include Berkshire Farm & Table, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, Columbia-Greene Media, Farm Credit East, the Farm On! Foundation, and Valley Oil.

The conference will take place Saturday, February 22nd, from 9 am-4:00 pm at Taconic Hills Central School, located in Columbia County, just a short drive from the Capital Region, the Berkshires, western Connecticut, and the lower Hudson Valley. Morning refreshments, lunch, and snacks are provided with a $20 pre-registration fee. Registration is requested by 5pm on Thursday, February 20th, but is available through Friday February 21st. All are welcome, and the walk-in rate on the day of the event is $25.

Talking Ethanol in Orlando with RFA

Chuck Zimmerman

National Ethanol ConferenceTalk about getting a break from winter. The attendees at the National Ethanol Conference in Orlando, Fl are loving it! It’s a beautiful sunny day to start things off with some fun activities like the annual golf tournament or an Everglades airboat ride. I took golf pictures while Cindy is checking out the Florida wildlife.

To kick off our coverage of this year’s conference, most of which will be posted on Domestic Fuel.com, I interviewed the Reverand of Renewable Fuels, Bob Dinneen, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association. As you might expect, Bob says they’ll be talking a lot about the EPA and the Renewable Fuels Standard. He likes the mood of attendees and says they’re optimistic. I personally think the sunshine and warm temps are helping!

You can listen to my interview with Bob here: Interview with Bob Dinneen
