Get to Know GMOs Month

Cindy Zimmerman

gmo-answersIf you wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness this month, you might pair it with green for Get to Know GMOs Month.

This month GMO Answers is inviting the public to “Get to Know GMOs”— to ask their toughest questions and join the conversation.

“With the coming of October, we welcome a new fall season, a new harvest and a new opportunity to connect with consumers about their food – from farm to table,” Cathleen Enright, Council for Biotechnology Information executive director and GMO Answers spokesperson, said. “At GMO Answers, we invite you to ask us any questions you might have about GMOs — from how they are created to who is growing them to what ends up on your table.”

More than a year ago, GMO Answers created a central online resource for information on GMOs and how our food is grown, called GMOAnswers.com. Since then, more than 650 questions have been asked and answered by more than 100 independent experts.

“Keep asking and we’ll keep answering; and this October we hope you’ll take the time to ‘Get to Know GMOs’,” Enright said.

Vilsack Gaining on Glickman in Office

Cindy Zimmerman

glickman-chicagoAgriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is within two weeks of serving longer in that position than Dan Glickman under President Clinton.

“In about 15 days he will beat my record, because I was in office about 5 years and 11 months,” said Glickman during his introduction of Vilsack at a Chicago Council on Global Affairs event on Monday. “He’s doing this to spite me.”

vilsack-chicagoThe last secretary of agriculture to serve two entire terms under the same president was Ezra Taft Benson under Eisenhower. Orville Freedman served two terms under Presidents Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

The longest serving secretary was James Wilson who served under William McKinley, Theodore Roosevent and William Howard Taft from 1897-1913. “I have no idea how he lasted 16 years in this job,” joked Vilsack. Former and Current Ag Secretaries Dan Glickman and Tom Vilsack

Just recently when Eric Holder resigned from the White House cabinet, Vilsack was asked if there was any truth to the rumor that he would be the next to go. “They must be talking to my grandkids who occasionally ask when I’m coming home to Iowa,” said Vilsack. “Unless the president has different thoughts, I’m keeping the job I got because I’m not sure I can get another one.”Vilsack react to Holder resignation

cfwf-14-guentherLisa Guenther is also the president of the CFWF this year. “The Canadian Farm Writers Federation includes … members from every province in Canada,” she says. “Our purpose is really networking and professional development for our members in the industry.”

The CFWF annual meeting is held in a different part of Canada every year “so we get to see agriculture in different regions across the country because there is quite a variance in the industry.” Guenther says she was pleased with this year’s attendance of nearly 100 for the event.

CFWF Discovers PEI Products

Cindy Zimmerman

cfwf-14-pei-preservesCheese, mussels, potatoes and preserves were just a few of the many Prince Edward Island products that Canadian Farm Writers learned more about during the 2014 CFWF conference.

Bruce MacNaughton and his wife operate the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company, located in an old butter factory, which uses local produce to make a variety of tasty preserves, marmalades, jellies, honeys, syrups and more. “It’s been a priority from day one to buy as much local fruit as we possibly can,” said MacNaughton. “We go through about 40 tons of berries a year and over half come from Prince Edward Island, including wild blueberries, rhubarb and black current, strawberries.”

In 2004, MacNaughton says they started the Gardens of Hope, which includes a Respite Cottage just finished last fall. He explains more in this interview with Trudy Kelly Forsythe of Cultivating Communications. Interview with Bruce MacNaughton, Prince Edward Island Preserve Company

cfwf-14-rileyWayne Riley was one of the tour organizers for this year’s CFWF conference. “We were really looking for farms that were distinctly PEI,” said Riley. “The theme of our conference was also “Dig Deep” so we took that to the tours as well.”

Riley explained that meant getting into the food side as well as industries that support agriculture, such as Veseys Seeds and the Culinary Institute of Canada. Interview with Wayne Riley, CFWF

Tell Us What You Think About Cheese

Jamie Johansen

New Holland ZimmPollOur latest ZimmPoll asked the question, “When do you think medicinal marijuana will become a major cash crop?”

It looks like many believe we are very close to recognizing medicinal marijuana as a major cash crop here in the United States. Five to ten years really isn’t that far away. Many are already researching and learning the in’s and out’s of growing marijuana. Will you be the next farmer of this potential cash crop?

Here are the poll results:

  • In the next 1-2 years – 16%
  • In the next 5+ years – 42%
  • Not anytime soon – 27%
  • Never – 15%

Our new ZimmPoll is now live and asks the question, What is your favorite type of cheese?

I just wrapped up my first trip to World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The event was full of cheese experiences so I thought I would ask you what your go to cheese was when sampling wine, cooking or simply having a snack. Personally, I haven’t found a cheese yet I didn’t like. Thanks again to New Holland Agriculture for making our coverage of the 2014 World Dairy Expo possible.

Get to Know Verdesian

Joanna Schroeder

Verdesian Life Sciences is a plant health plant nutrition company. According to CEO and founder JJ Grow, from the start their plan was to create a portfolio of companies that had really good technology focused on nitrogen and phosphorous efficiencies as well as delivery systems, elicitors and innocolents. Or “things that help fixate nitrogen”.

Beginning in 2011 when Grow was in the process of founding the company, his team looked at companies that already had technologies in the marketplace as well as companies that had technologies in development. He said there were 90 plus companies they looked at and last week the company purchased its sixth company: QC Corporation.

JJ Grow Verdesian-2“With a deep and global understanding of the agriculture industry, I realized I wanted to focus on taking tomorrow’s science and deliver today’s returns,” explained Grow. Thus the formation of Verdesian Life Sciences in September 2012 and the company’s philosophy. In this short time, Verdesian has become a leader in nitrogen and phosphorous technologies and products with one of their break-out technologies, Take Off, well, taking off.

Grow said they are in a position to hold a leadership position in the ag industry. “The biggest thing we look at is technology. I’ve worked at a lot of different companies who had really good technology and the one thing I’ve learned is if you have a technology that can be used in the marketplace and brings value to a farmer whether that’s in yield or efficiencies, you’re going to be successful with those technologies.”

Grow said if you look at the company’s technologies focused on macronutrients and micronutrients there is an unmet need in the marketplace and a lot of big companies have not focused here. The big companies have focused more on traditional pesticides and the herbicide companies have focused on the NP and K. “I think we’re in a unique position. By acquiring the leaders of those smaller companies we’ve put together a much larger company that can compete in the marketplace.”

Verdesian will be making some big technology announcements this fall so keep your eyes and ears on alert.

To learn more about Verdesian, their latest acquisition of QC Corporation and what’s next for the company, listen to my interview with JJ Grow: Interview with JJ Grow, Verdesian

Verdesian – From the Lab to the Field

Joanna Schroeder

I recently had the opportunity to learn about Verdesian’s philosophy of how they take technologies and customize them to agriculture. I should take a step back and mention that Verdesian has a strong relationship with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in the process of taking their defense research and “spinning it off” for agricultural applications.

Nigel Grech VerdesianAs Nigel Grech, executive vice president of Science & Technology, explains science is critical to their company and for agriculture but many journalists and growers alike aren’t familiar with the science. This is a barrier, he said, because when you understand the basic science of a technology, then you understand the benefits of the technology.

So how does this LANL-Verdesian partnership work? Grech said there are four keys to successfully going from the lab to the farmer’s field:

  1. Understanding the technology
  2. Construction of intellectual property
  3. Integration into what farms do
  4. Education

“We need to make sure we have early access so we can structure the language properly. Oftentimes researchers don’t understand applications on the farm,” explained Rech when discussing the construction of intellectual property. Companies get into trouble when the language isn’t structured correctly. He also noted that today farmers have to do more with less; they need more product with less volume and this can be tricky.

When asked why education is so important Grech said, “A lot of good inventions go sideways because companies don’t do a good job of educating people about their product. Farmers need to know what it does, how to use it and what the benefits are.”

One example of a successful pathway from LANL to the field is the company’s Take-Off product. Grech explained it is formulated in such as way it can be used with multiple applications and this makes the product unique. I learned that there will be a new generation of Take-Off announced in the next couple of weeks so watch out for this.

To learn more about the partnership as well as about Take-Off listen to my interview with Nigel Grech: Interview with Nigel Grech, Verdesian

CASE IH Connects at CFWF 2014 Conference

Cindy Zimmerman

cfwf-case-tractorsBeautiful Prince Edward Island (PEI) was the spot for the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation 2014 Annual Conference and CASE IH was a Russet sponsor of the event. The sponsor categories were aptly named this year in honor of PEI’s largest agricultural industry – potatoes – and Russet is the top.

Two shiny red CASE IH tractors decorated the lawn of the conference hotel – “We’re a sponsor=we bring tractors!” tweeted Dan Danford with CASE IH.

cfwfOur Canadian correspondent, Trudy Kelly Forsythe of Cultivating Communications, talked to Dan at the opening reception of the conference on Thursday about why CASE IH is so supportive of the CFWF. “It’s one of the few opportunities we have to connect with our Canadian editors and that’s a very important audience to us,” said Dan. “We wanted to be more pro-active in nurturing our relationship with the Canadian media and making sure they know we’re available to help them.”

Dan says CASE IH has a good presence in the Canadian farm equipment market so he thinks being a part of CFWF is a “win-win situation.”

New Holland Clean Energy Leader at Expo Milano 2015

Chuck Zimmerman

Carlo LambroDuring New Holland Blogger Days in Turin, Italy I met Carlo Lambro, Brand President (3rd from right). Before a fantastic dinner we sat down so I could interview him via ZimmGlass. I first asked him about New Holland’s decision to be a major supporter of Expo Milano 2015 and the Sustainable Farm pavilion they are constructing for next year’s event. He says, “Being there is an important step in showing our commitment to what we call the Clean Energy Leader strategy, to what we call sustainable farming.” He says Expo provides a great opportunity to help educate the non-farm public about farming today. The New Holland pavilion won’t be a place to sell products but to be seen as an industry leading company that is providing a very educational experience. One of the things they will show is their commitment to renewable energy with a prototype methane powered tractor!

I also asked him about the big New Holland product launch and how that was being received by customers as well why they decided to bring in a group of ag bloggers.

You can listen to my interview with Carlo here: Interview with Carlo Lambro
