Alltech International Symposium Concludes

Dr. Pearse LyonsThe 2011 Alltech International Animal Health & Nutrition Symposium has concluded and with a resounding message to dream the impossible dream. Dr. Pearse Lyons took the stage to summarize what we learned and to provide some takeaway ideas that included five things that should be on your business survival action list.

1. No fads, no fashions, just change
2. Don’t be first, don’t be the best, be different
3. Know where growth comes from and get to where it is
4. Don’t act now!
5. It is about you – and everything you do

You can hear him explain these in his closing remarks below. In addition to these action items he listed a number of “Game Changers” that included an announcement that Alltech will make the single biggest investment in the company ever within the next eighteen months. This includes building new plants and expanding others in several countries. He also announced that the National Horse Show will be moving to Lexington, KY with Alltech as the title sponsor and that Alltech will once again be the title sponsor for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games which will be held in Normandy, France in 2014.

Alltech SymposiumAs Dr. Lyons encouraged everyone to dream the impossible dream he was joined on stage by Dr. Everett McCorvey and University of Kentucky students opera singers. They launched into a wonderful rendition of the famous song.

I recorded Dr. Lyons closing remarks which include the beautiful voices we’ve come to love at an Alltech Symposium: Alltech Symposium Closing Remarks

Alltech On Programmed Nutrition

Dr. Karl DawsonThe closing general session of the Alltech Symposium features a number of speakers. First up is Dr. Karl Dawson, Center for Animal Nutrigenomics and Applied Animal Nutrition, Alltech. His theme is “Programmed Nutrition.” A very interesting concept. He was introduced by Dr. Pearse Lyons as Mr. Genomics since he has created or been involved in the creation of so many new words that end in genomics.

Dr. Dawson says he’s more optimistic about the future of animal health and human nutrition than he ever has been. He then walked us through many of the projects Alltech is working on in this area via the Center that he manages. Some quotes that really caught my attention from his talk include:

“Performance & product quality are not influenced by the genes but ultimately determined by gene expression.”

“You are what your mother ate.”

“It’s not just what we feed but when we feed it.”

Alltech International Dinner

Dr. Pearse LyonsThe International Dinner at the Alltech Symposium was another joyful celebration of not only good food but good fellowship and music. We had the winners of the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition from the University of Kentucky perform as well as our very own, Dr. Pearse Lyons, founder and President of Alltech. He was introduced on stage by Dr. Everett McCorvey, Director of Opera, Lexington Opera Society Endowed Chair in Opera Studies at UK.

This is my 5th Symposium. Dr. Lyons is amazed at the fact that this is the 27th event. There is record attendance. To me it seems almost like a family experience and he says that’s what they try to create. This evening it was an “international family.”

Alltech and Algae

Alltech AlgaeMy first stop after registering for the Alltech Symposium was the tour of their new Winchester, KY Algae plant. Here’s one of the many tour groups getting to see the facility in action today. The company purchased the plant late last year and is in the process of fully converting it into a scaled-down replica of a large production system that will allow Alltech to research and perfect production methods before rolling them out on a large scale. The plant contains fermentors that stand over 8 stories high and have a capacity of 265,000 liters. Once they get into full 24/7 production this plant will produce about 10,000 metric tons of algae material per year. The algae produced by the plant can be used in animal feed, food supplements, pharmaceuticals, bioremediation and biofuels.

While I was waiting on a tour to get started I spoke with Kyle Raney who works for Alltech in applications research with a focus on algae. He describes the facility and the projects they’re working on right now. Many of the algae products they produce will be used by Alltech’s own animal nutrition products as well as being sold to other customers.

Nebraskans Believe Farmers Take Care of Animals

Sen. Tom CarlsonProtecting and growing agriculture amidst the activist conflict was the topic of the first panel discussion at the Animal Agriculture Alliance Stakeholders Summit. Nebraska Senator Tom Carlson was a panelist and he made it very clear that animal rights activists are not welcome in his state. He says that when these groups come into a state, they don’t know the state and they try to paint all of agriculture with a broad brush. The fact is that farmers love their animals and take very good care of them. He uses an anecdote of how during a winter blizzard farmers were out in the severe weather taking care of their livestock and HSUS was no where to be seen. He also pointed to research that found that ninety percent of people in Nebraska believe the livestock industry is important and ninety four percent trust farmers to take humane care of their animals!

The Senator believes the mission of the Church is number one and the mission to raise food to feed people follows and is a noble mission. He says activists just want to stop killing animals for food. They really aren’t in favor of the humane treatment of animals for food. He says this conference helps bring out how important it is for different agricultural interests to come together in the face of a common threat.

United We Eat

I’m getting ready for the Animal Agriculture Alliance Stakeholders Summit. It’s time to head back out on the agriblogging highway.

The Animal Agriculture Alliance will host its tenth annual Stakeholders Summit May 5-6, 2011 in Arlington, Virginia. The Summit will bring together food and farm industry leaders to reflect on the challenges of the past decade and new opportunities to strengthen agriculture advocacy efforts in the future. The Summit is truly a one-of-a-kind event that is attended by a diverse group of decision makers, including representatives from farms, ranches, food processors, restaurants, grocery stores, legislators, universities and government agencies.

My coverage of the event is being sponsored by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and United Soybean Board. I’m looking forward to a great learning experience that will included interviews and photos. But you’ve come to expect that right?

ADVENT From Novus Keeping Broilers Healthy

Bruce KingI’m still learning about the new things going on at Novus International, especially when it comes to poultry. At the recent International Poultry Expo I spoke with Bruce King, Biologicals Director, about a product called ADVENT.

Bruce says ADVENT is a vaccine for coccidiosis control in broilers. He says that other products are seeing some resistance to the disease and the industry is becoming more open to vaccines. He says they’ve learned that they can use the product in small birds. Coccidiosis is estimated to be the number one disease in broilers in the world.

Novus Announces TREVERA

Jared HuxWe always ask, “What’s new?” when conducting interviews and during the recent International Poultry Expo, our sponsor, Novus International had some news.

I spoke with Jared about DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid. He calls it the king of the omega-3 fatty acids. Besides being very healthy for humans it also is for poultry. It helps promote growth and the nutritional value of eggs and meat. According to Jared the “new” comes in with their product TREVERA. This is an algae based omega-3 DHA which they just launched. He says you can find omega-3 eggs in the grocery store now and that you should look for ones that say DHA.

Activate Poultry Health With Novus International

Jared HuxI think I mentioned recently that I still had some interviews to share from the International Poultry Expo with our long time and much appreciated sponsor, Novus International. It has been a very busy time going from Poultry Expo to a blizzard at home, the Cattle Industry Convention and then the National Biodiesel Conference! Now it’s catch up time and I want to start by sharing this interview with Andres Montoya, Product Development Manager, Poultry. He was right at home in Georgia where he’s based. I wasn’t the only one interviewing him as you can see in the photo.

We got started right away with the “what’s new?” question. What’s new is Activate.

ACTIVATE® nutritional feed acid is a combination of Gut Environment Modifiers and HMTBa. ACTIVATE is used for Salmonella reduction programs and as an alternative to antibiotics in vaccination windows and withdrawal diets.

Taking International Poultry Tour With Novus

Shawn AtkinsInternational is in the name of the show and our sponsor for coverage of the largest poultry show in the world. Novus International shows that by having a number of their representatives on hand for different areas of the world. I spoke with several of them during the International Poultry Expo starting with Shawn Atkins, Sales Director, Poultry & Dairy, in the United States. Shawn talks about how their products can help with feed optimization which is crucial to raising poultry successfully. He says attendees have been asking about specific products in the specialty area.

Shawn says the industry is in a precarious position in the U.S. because demand has declined while input costs have gone up. It’s like a double whammy on producers and Novus is working on products to help on the input side. You can listen to my interview with Shawn here: Interview With Shawn Atkins

Albert Van DijkTurning to another part of the world I spoke with Albert Van Dijk, Market Manager, Poultry & Swine, EME. Albert handles the European and Middle East territory. He says poultry is a challenging market in the EU right now since growth has stabilized. However, in areas like the Ukraine, Turkey and Russia poultry is growing.

He says that since the best way to reduce feed costs is to reduce the feed conversion ration in the animal and this is where Novus fits in. They can save up to five percent or more on feed costs. Additionally, Albert says that since antibiotics were banned in the EU in animal feed, Novus products have played an important role in the feeding program. You can listen to my interview with Albert here: Interview With Albert Van Dijk

Jorge GonzalezOur next stop on our world tour with Novus is the northern Latin America region. Taking care of business there is Jorge Gonzalez, Sales Manager, LAN. His region includes Mexico. Jorge says the business is big and growing. It has also been expanding beyond poultry into swine and ruminants.

The poultry industry in his territory depends heavily on grains from the U.S. and so the higher costs of late have been challenging. This is why enzyme products like those sold by Novus play a key role in helping them be competitive on the world market. He says a trade show like this one are very important to producers in his area since it’s their opportunity to get first hand knowledge of technology that they can bring home to their operation. You can listen to my interview with Jorge here: Interview With Jorge Gonzalez

Craige AllanFinally, let’s look at the Asian/Pacific market with Craige Allan (pictured right), Regional Marketing Manager, South East Asia. He says all areas are experiencing growth in production/consumption since the population is growing so much. Craige enjoys finding out the needs of his customers and then helping them to formulate a solution. He says this strategy works well for Novus.

In his territory is a range of sizes and types of producers from large integrators like here in the U.S. as well as a lot of smaller operators. He thinks the market area will eventually become an exporter to other countries, particularly in the EU. Some of the customers he’s spoken with here are from Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and Bangladash. That shows the international nature of this show! Novus International Started In Poultry

Scott CarterWorking with Novus International yesterday I conducted several interviews that I’ll be featuring here on AgWired. To start out, I talked with Scott Carter (left). Scott is the global poultry market manager so he was a good one to provide an overview of how important the poultry market is for the company. He says it’s the market they started in and their largest customer segment.

There are several key issues that Novus is addressing in the poultry sector right now that Scott says include feed efficiency, gut health and feed safety. I always like to learn what’s new and he points to their IDEA assay:

IDEA™ assay allows users to determine the protein and amino acid digestibility of feed ingredients. IDEA assay analyzes the ingredients in a formulation in order to optimize feed balance and nutrition. IDEA is an excellent tool to help users screen different batches and sources of a given ingredient and gives them the opportunity to use alternative feed ingredients.

From The Lab To The Dinner Table

Charlie ArnotGiving a keynote address to a Novus International luncheon for poultry industry scientists was Charlie Arnot, Center for Food Integrity. His remarks were titled “From The Lab To The Dinner Table.” He presented consumer trust research they conducted in 2010 that found out some very interesting things including the fact that it was the first time consumers have said their number one source of food information is the internet.

The research has been conducted by CFI since 2006. You can download a pdf of the 2010 summary on their website.

In 2010, CFI is taking its research to the next level, testing the trust model, messages and programs with specific consumer segments. The findings from this year‘s groundbreaking approach will provide guidance to CFI members and others on how we can specifically build trust with opinion leading consumers who drive social change.

Charlie told scientists that CFI research suggests new ways to convert scientific information into messages that will resonate with consumers. They’ve used that information to create tested messages which you can find on their website. For example, he suggests speaking to values first and then backing statements up with the science. Historically the ag science industry has tried the opposite approach. He hopes the attendees take away ideas for different way to engage the consumer. He gives some other specific examples in my interview with him: Interview with Charlie Arnot

Beef Producer Emphasizes Importance of Social Media To Ag

This year’s Alltech Global 500 includes a full program for beef producers. As we’ve said many times before, if you’re in the dairy business, you’re in the beef business. So, I spoke with one of the beef farmers here, Charles Miller. He’s a Kentucky cattleman so he didn’t have as far to go as many who are here from 29 different countries.

Charles says he’s an Alltech customer and he’s glad to see the company placing a greater emphasis on beef lately and here at this conference. He sees the interaction with international farmers as a great opportunity. He says that one of the most interesting things he has seen and learned so far is the importance and perspective on social media. He said, “As we go forward as an industry, if we fail to utilize that tool to our best advantage we’re going to be left behind.”

Dairy and Beef For Alltech

Dairy or Beef. The choice is yours at the Alltech Global 500. We’ve got two conferences taking place this year as the company expands on its successful dairy conference.

I’ll be focusing on dairy quite a bit while Alltech’s Dave Butler takes care of the beef side but we’ll be sharing content. My photos will be loaded into this album during the conference: Alltech Global 500 Photo Album. I’ll post links to additional resources as soon as I can.

This evening we kick off with a Kentucky Ale welcome reception which is staring soon. It’s going to be a fun week in Lexington!

2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Have Begun

The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are underway at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. I’m here courtesy of one of the sponsors of the games, John Deere. I’ll be tracking some of their activities here for the next couple days.

To get things started I spoke with the Vice President of Alltech, Aidan Connolly. Aidan has been here all day so I asked him about his observations. He says the games just couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. A nice rain brought in some cooler but sunny weather and the crowds have been big. It’s all building up to tonight’s opening ceremony which I’ll be attending. Aidan says the games are showcasing agriculture and people have been asking just what Alltech does since I guess this might be a first time for a company like Alltech, involved in animal health and nutrition, to sponsor the games. It’s also the first time they’ve been held in the United States! Aidan says their involvement with the games has been a “game changer.” This includes the new contacts they’ve made internationally and growth in their business. So from my perspective it all looks good from here.
