SMS Winter Training Dates are Announced!

Melissa Sandfort

Insights WeeklyHarvest is upon us and hopefully that means you are seeing the hard work that you’ve put in all season starting to pay off! As you watch the bushels on your yield monitor, do you question the factors that make some areas of the field more productive? Are you thinking about ways you can maximize profitability across all areas of your field? If you’ve answered yes to these questions, the next logical question is how do you go about making that happen?

SMS-Training-700x525The answer – by using your data to make better management decisions in the future. While there is not one solution that will work for all of us, if you don’t take the time to look at your data, you won’t find any answers! The SMS Desktop Software can help you analyze your data and make future seasons more productive. Whether you increase profit by optimizing your fields fertility levels with soil sampling and variable rate application or you decrease input costs by creating variable rate planting prescriptions, the SMS Software can help you accomplish your goals.

Not sure how to get started? Let us take the guess work out of it for you, by attending one of our classroom or online trainings this winter. We have trainings scheduled in several locations across the U.S. and online trainings can take place no matter where you are located! These trainings help you to gain hands-on experience in processing data, creating maps and reports, building field boundaries, creating prescriptions and populating your field displays with all the needed data for the next crop season. To learn more about our trainings please go here.

Have a safe harvest and we look forward to seeing you this winter!

2013 World Food Day

Chuck Zimmerman

2013 World Food DayI like to think of every day as food day but there is that special day each October as proclaimed by the FAO – World Food Day.

Once a year, on 16 October, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations commemorates its inception by celebrating efforts and raising awareness for the worlds hunger and nutrition problems. The focus this year: “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition”. This year’s theme aims to highlight the problems and solutions present in the fight to end hunger. FAO is encouraging all participants to reflect and raise awareness about the diverse efforts being used to help feed the world’s population.

Coming Inside to Warm Up

Melissa Sandfort

I can always tell what time of year it is by the number of dead flies I find lining the window sills and beneath the night lights in the kids’ rooms. I just leave the hose on my vacuum because it’s a daily occurrence – me picking up flies in an effort not to have them squashed up and down the wooden staircase. I guess it’s getting colder outside because they’re all trying to get in to warm up.

* STOP! Look before you eat that soup. A fly may have fallen in it. (They do seem to fall from mid-air.) *

My great-grandmother had a good idea. Grandpa tells us the story this week:

Listen to Grandpa explain

Maybe I should tell my son I’ll pay him a penny for each fly he picks up! See, maybe things aren’t so different than they were back then.

Until we walk again …

John Deere Dealer Perspective

Chuck Zimmerman

Jeff BarnesJeff Barnes, Greenway Equipment, a John Deere dealership, is their manager of farm technology. He says yesterday’s announcements from John Deere of their new Developer.Deere.com portal and the MyJohnDeere Data API is a big step for the company. I talked with him to get his perspective on what the company is doing.

He says their dealership has been actively involved with John Deere as the new data transfer system has been developed. “Now it’s time when we really need these tools to come together to build out things so our customers can take that data and use it in their operations.” He says this is making precision ag easier and helping more growers make use of the data they create during the season.

BASF Helping to Fight Weed Resistance Globally

Cindy Zimmerman

basf-germany-jordiWeed resistance is an increasing problem on a global scale, but BASF vice president for global research herbicides Jordi Tormo says the problem in the United States really stands out.

“I would say it’s more spectacular because of the speed of the development of the resistance,” he said during an interview at the BASF global press conference in Germany. “It’s growing at a speed that we never expected.”

That is why BASF is working so hard to help farmers understand how they can fight or even prevent resistance. “Farmers should use more modes of action in a rotational way,” said Jordi, adding that application timing should include both pre- and post-emerge herbicides.
