Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider Appreciates Ethanol

Cindy Zimmerman

Dee Snider, lead singer for Twisted Sister, known for the popular bikers song “Ride To Live, Live To Ride”, served as Captain for the 12th annual Legends Ride at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, sponsored by the Renewable Fuels Association and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground.

The “We’re Not Gonna Take It” singer had some nice things to say about ethanol prior to the ride. “Renewable fuels, ethanol is amazing and the more we use, the better,” said Snider. “I’ve been an environmentalist forever and driving muscle cars and motorcycles isn’t the friendliest so it’s nice to have an alternative.”

Wyffels Aims to Serve Those Who Served

Carrie Muehling

A new program from Wyffels Hybrids gives farmers an opportunity to support America’s military veterans.

The program, launched in July 2019, is called Serving Those Who Served. For the 2020-21 growing season, the initiative will benefit Homes For Our Troops. For every bag of W5086RIB sold, Wyffels Hybrids will donate $2 back to the Homes For Our Troops program. In addition, hats and t-shirts are also available, with proceeds benefiting the program.

“Wyffels Hybrids’ mission is to relentlessly work together, serving corn growers in pursuit of a more productive and profitable crop,” said Jill Loehr, Wyffels communications manager. “That’s something that Bill, Sr. started when he started the company 70-plus years ago, and that’s something that the Wyffels family still believes strongly today as the third generation takes over.”

Wyffels shared the new program at the 2019 Ag Media Summit in Minneapolis and will continue to promote it at the 2019 Farm Progress Show in Decatur. For more information or to buy merchandise, visit www.wyffels.com/stws.

Data Drives Sustainable Solutions

Cindy Zimmerman

Farmers are being challenged to grow more food more sustainably with less resources moving forward, and the key to making that possible is data.

An Ag Media Summit panel focused on how companies are working to help growers collect and analyze the right data to enhance their sustainability efforts. Willie Vogt, Farm Progress, moderated the Newsmaker panel on “Data Drives Sustainable Solutions” which featured Steven Ward with The Climate Corporation; Pat Christie, Founder of Conservis; and Minnesota farmer Justin Stock.

Educating #SturgisRally Bikers about E10 Once Again

Chuck Zimmerman

RFA at Sturgis Buffalo ChipFrom the Ag Media Summit and IFAJ Congress to the Sturgis Rally at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. There is quite a difference in the local flora and fauna if you know what I mean.

Here’s the Renewable Fuels Association team with Rusty Wallace of racing fame and Rod Woodruff, owner of the Buffalo Chip. We’ll be doing on-stage promotions and free fuel happy hours this week as we help motorcycle enthusiasts learn more about using E10 in their machines which all manufacturers warranty.

This annual event has been a valuable opportunity for RFA to overcome mis-information about this renewable fuel. I’ve been working RFA’s Robert White and team for years now and we have many repeat visitors to the free fuel happy hours to fill their motorcycles with a high octane E10 blend of gas so they can go ride all they want. I’ve interviewed countless riders who have used E10 and never had a single problem with it. We’re also doing on-stage promotions each night prior to the big name entertainment which this year features Disturbed, Snoop Dog and Toby Keith. Now that’s a contrast in music! It’s going to be fun and of course, educational.

Lots of photos being added to the Flickr album for this year’s event.

New Holland Values Ag Media

Carrie Muehling

New Holland was among companies interacting with journalists at the 2019 Ag Media Summit in Minneapolis.

“We came out here to the Ag Media Summit to meet with journalists because we wanted to support the journalists who do a great job sharing the story of the American and the North American farmer, as well as the great story of companies like New Holland with our 125 years of storied history. We’ve had a very strong relationship and we wanted to be here as a sponsor and help support all of that,” said Luke Zerby, New Holland Precision Land Management.

Zerby was also exhibiting the company’s tractor simulator, featuring customer driven technology and innovation for improved farmer comfort and efficiency. Zerby said New Holland is looking forward to the 2019 Farm Progress Show, where the company’s display will have a “community vibe.”

IFAJ Congress Hears from Reporters Without Borders

Cindy Zimmerman

Here in the United States we tend to take freedom of the press for granted, since it is specifically guaranteed in the First Amendment. But it’s not so free in many other countries.

The 2019 IFAJ Congress last week featured a presentation from Daphne Pellegrino with Reporters Without Borders, more properly known internationally as Reporters Sans Frontieres or RSF, which publishes an annual World Press Freedom Index evaluating the state of journalism in 180 countries and territories.

Pellegrino says the countries are ranked based on surveys and the lower the number the better the score. “At the top of our index this year are three countries that generally tend to rank on the top, places where press freedom is considered to be a cultural value,” she said. They are Norway, Finland and Sweden. The Netherlands and Denmark round out the top five. The rest of the top ten are Switzerland, New Zealand, Jamaica, Belgium, and Costa Rica.

At the bottom of the index are “places we consider information black holes,” said Pellegrino. Coming in last is Turkmenistan, bordered by Afghanistan and Iran, with a government controlled press that is actually worse than North Korea, which moved up a notch this year to 179th place.

The United States is ranked 48th, down three places in this year’s Index and the media climate is now classified as “problematic” by RSF. Pellegrino says that is due primarily to the shooting at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, in June 2018 that killed four journalists and one other member of the newspaper’s staff.

Trump Announces Deal to Expand U.S. Beef Exports to EU

Cindy Zimmerman

President Donald J. Trump congratulated members of the nation’s beef cattle industry Friday as the United States and the European Union signed an agreement that is expected to nearly triple the duty-free access for high quality U.S. beef exports to Europe. .

“This is a tremendous victory for American farmers, ranchers, and, of course, European consumers because American beef is considered the best in the world,” said President Trump during the signing ceremony at the White House on Friday. “In year one, duty-free American beef exports to the EU will increase by 46 percent. Over seven years, they will increase by another 90 percent. In total, the duty-free exports will rise from $150 million to $420 million, an increase of over 180 percent.”

Among other beef industry representatives, the president was joined by National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) president Jennifer Houston. “For many years it has been difficult for us to sell our high-quality U.S. beef to European consumers because of the restrictive tariff and non-tariff barriers, but the establishment of this 35,000 metric ton duty-free quota sends the signal to America’s cattle industry that Europe is ready for U.S. beef,” said Houston.
