Georgia Agri-Leaders Forum Foundation

Jimmy HillThe emcee for the Willie B. Withers luncheon at Sunbelt Ag Expo was Mr. Jimmy Hill, President/CEO, Georgia Agri-Leaders Forum Foundation. Jimmy says they develop leaders in agribusiness and forestry with a 12 month program. He says they have 18 people involved in this year’s program. The goal is to develop leaders who will get involved and help solve challenges faced by the industry.

The Study Institute Program of the Georgia Agri-Leaders Forum is an intensive exposure to a wide range of issues and policy discussion. These range from the economy to governmental process, as well as, a liberal opportunity to broaden leadership skills. The one-year program consists of six Study Institutes covering issues affecting those committed to agriculture, agribusiness, forestry and leadership in rural Georgia. Four In-State Institutes are structured in a three-day/two night format; A Government-in-Session (Atlanta/Washington DC) Institute covers eight days; and a National Travel Experience Institute in another state covers six days. Each Institute stresses leadership skills and generates sensitivity to pertinent issues, giving the participants an in-depth understanding of what it takes to get involved in bringing about solutions to political, economical, cultural, social, agricultural, agribusiness, forestry and leadership issues in rural Georgia.

Farming Fish In Ponds

Southeastern Pond ManagementThere’s more than one way to farm fish. Usually you think ponds of tilapia or catfish right? Well there’s also sports fishing pond management of game fish like bass and bluegill. At Sunbelt Ag Expo they have a “fishing ponds” exhibit area. One of the exhibitors is Southeastern Pond Management. Seen in the photo is Kedric Nutt. He says his company helps a land owner manage their fish ponds which includes fish selection, weed control, pond evaluation and more.

Here at Expo the exhibit area is conducting seminars and has a demo pond which Kedric says has a bass species that is trained to eat pellet fish food but will still strike a fishing lure.

You can listen to my interview with Kedric below:

Promoting Alpacas

AlpacaAt this year’s Sunbelt Ag Expo, Alpacas are popular, especially baby ones. Promoting them is the Southeastern Alpaca Association. Representing the Association here is Carrie Gamblin, Southern Hummers Alpacas, pictured with her husband Jay.

Carrie says the organization is the “hub” for all the member farms. Each farm gets a web page that’s part of the organizational website. They also have an annual show in March and do seminars throughout the year. One of the main projects they’re working on is to get enough animals in the country to convince the millers to take their fiber and run it through the milling process. So far there hasn’t been enough to make that happen. Apparently alpaca fiber would require different milling equipment than wool.

The KIOTI MECHRON

John WallaceKIOTI has just introduced a new utility vehicle – The MECHRON. Sounds kind of like a character in Transformers. But a couple of different versions were on display at Sunbelt Ag Expo. Now just about everyone has a utility vehicle in their product lineup. I spoke to Ron Parrish in the KIOTI exhibit about their new offering.

This Ultimate Transport Vehicle™ is driven by a fuel-efficient 22hp, 3-cylinder Daedong diesel engine that gives superb power and excellent fuel economy. With one of the widest tracks on the market and 4-wheel drive, the MECHRON™ delivers stable operation and superior traction over challenging terrain and up steep slopes. Front limited slip differential and rear differential lock are standard. The KIOTI UTV offers a 56″-wide dump bed – the widest on the market – for a 1600 pound payload capacity, 23% higher than the market leader.

Wild Georgia Shrimp

John WallaceYou don’t normally think of shrimp and agriculture at the same time. However, here at Sunbelt Ag Expo the Georgia Shrimp Association would like to educate you and feed you at the same time. John Wallace is the President and I caught him frying shrimp early on opening day of the show.

He says their shrimp are from the Atlantic Ocean so they’re “farmers of the sea.” They harvest between four to six million pounds of shrimp a year. Their food booth is actually a good fund raiser for their association.

North Carolina Commissioner of Ag Steve Troxler

Steve TroxlerSteve Troxler is the Commissioner of Agriculture for North Carolina. His state is the spotlight state at this year’s Sunbelt Ag Expo. Steve is here to help kick things off and then I’ll bet he heads back home since their state fair is taking place right now too.

He cut the ribbon this morning at their tent to kick off this year’s Expo and I talked with him. He says their Got To Be NC Agriculture program is one of the ways they’re promoting NC farm products to consumers.

Steve TroxlerSteve says that agriculture is a $70 billion industry in North Carolina. In the picture with Steve above you can see a tobacco plant on the left. He says NC is the number one tobacco producing state in the country. They’re also number one in sweet potatoes.

Increasing AgrAbility

ZimmCast-193 - Assisting With AgrAbilityA great project to help farmers with disabilities or injuries is the AgrAbility Project. This is a national project which is handled by various state organizations. While I was at Sunbelt Ag Expo, I spoke with AgrAbility In Georgia Project Manager, Rebecca Brightwell. She describes how they help farmers in need so they can keep on farming.

For example, they might need a tractor lift but don’t have the resources to obtain one. She says they can help find those resources for the farmer. The Georgia project has a blog too.

The program this week ends with music from the Podsafe Music Network. This one is called “Reasonable Ability” from General Fuzz. I hope you enjoy it and thank you for listening.

Catching Up With Ev Griner

ZimmCast-192 - Catching Up With Ev GrinerDuring last week’s Sunbelt Ag Expo the first person I interviewed was Ev Griner. Ev has been in broadcasting since 1948 (60 years)! He’s an icon of the farm broadcasting business in the deep southeast and is still producing daily programming for Southeast AgNet. I’ve known Ev for a lot of years but hadn’t seen him in over 10 years.

Ev and Vivian GrinerSo we sat down and got caught up and I recorded our conversation for you. Ev has seen a lot of changes in communications as you can well imagine. So when I asked him for his advice on how to communicate to today’s farmer he just said, “Communications.” He says that the farmer has not only always been open minded but looking to technology to help him in his business and that includes how he gets information.

While I was in Moultrie, GA, I got to have supper with Ev and his wife, Vivian (pictured here). It was a great time and I’m glad I got the chance.

The program this week ends with music from the Podsafe Music Network. This one is called “Cotton Picking Blues” from Son Seals. I hope you enjoy it and thank you for listening.

Get Hot Water Forever With Propane

Tankless Water HeaterHow would you like to have all the hot water you want without running out when the tank is empty? How about getting a propane powered water heater without a tank? Sounds like a plan to me.

Chris Moran, Gulf State Sales, was in the Georgia Propane Gas Association building at Sunbelt Ag Expo to talk with farmers and other attendees about getting a Rinnai tankless water heater. He had one on display, connected to an air handler since it can also function a dual purpose and heat air as well.

You don’t use hot water 24 hours a day. But, you’re paying to heat water 24 hours a day. With a standard water heater, you heat and reheat the same water even when you’re sleeping. The Rinnai tankless water heater is a more efficient way to heat water. It heats water quickly and delivers an endless supply of hot water for as long as you need it. With the Rinnai tankless water heater, you only pay to heat water when you need it and for as long as you want it.

Propane Powered Mowers

Propane Powered MowersThe propane powered mowers shown at Sunbelt Ag Expo got a lot of attention from farmers and other attendees. On hand to show them off was Richard Carr, National Sales Manager, EnviroGard, a division of Onyx Environmental Solutions.

Richard says they manufacture their own line of mowers but also provide conversion kits for existing mowers. He says you’ll get better fuel economy and cleaner air when you use propane to mow.

EnviroGard’s “Low Polluting Lawn Mower” meets all current and future emission requirements by the Environmental Protection Agency. There is up to a 60% reduction in smog forming emissions and 80% reduction in toxic emissions compared with diesel and gasoline fuel.

Sunbelt Ag Expo Executive Director Chip Blalock

Chip BlalockThe Executive Director of the Sunbelt Ag Expo is Chip Blalock, seen here at the Southeastern Farmer of the Year luncheon. When I spoke to him he said, “We’ve had truly Chamber of Commerce type weather this week.” I echo that since it was sunny with a nice breeze all the time I was there.

I asked him to tell us a little about the history of the show, especially this unique location on an ex-military airfield. One of the things that has become increasingly important is the relationship with companies that are providing products and services to people who want to live the country life. He says that the rural lifestyle market is well served now at the show.

When it comes to marketing Chip says they depend heavily on their relationship with the media and all farm media. For example, when it comes to radio he says, “On the radio side, we work closely with Southeast AgNet. They cut a wide swath through Georgia, Florida and Alabama, what we call the deep southeast.” He mentions lots of specific media outlets and says there’s just too many to mention them all.

Picking Cotton at Sunbelt Ag Expo

John Deere 7760 Cotton PickerI only got to go out in the field for the cotton picking demonstration at Sunbelt Ag Expo but it was great. The weather was beautiful and the cotton looked awesome. I’ve got a number of pictures in the photo album.

One of the main machines involved was the new John Deere 7760 Self Propelled Cotton Picker. This bad boy will be ready for sales next year but growers can call their local dealer to get an on-farm demonstration.

I liked the American flag touch. It was waving in the nice breeze we had all day.

There were also field demonstrations with corn, soybeans, hay and peanuts.

Grilling With Propane at Sunbelt Ag Expo

Joel GarrettThere’s no question that if you grill food you’re going to attract a crowd. That’s what Joel Garrett, Garrett Grills, is doing for his second year at the Georgia Propane Gas Association building at the Sunbelt Ag Expo. I don’t think he, or the other members of the cooking crew, could cook fast enough to feed everyone but they were trying. They were cooking pork roasts, sausage, boiled peanuts, cookies, and more. I’ve been a regular sampler.

Joel says that you have a lot more control over temperature when you’re grilling with propane and it’s more efficient. In this interview he’ll give us a look inside this 250 gallon, converted propane tank, cooker and you’ll wish you were there! There were a lot of farmers looking at this cooker with envy.

Georgia Propane Gas Association President

Lynda HummThe President of the Georgia Propane Gas Association is Lynda Humm. She was behind the registration table for their Sunbelt Ag Expo drawings every time I came by their building. You won’t find a friendlier person in the propane industry. I thought it was interesting that her company primarily supplies propane to fork lift operators. However, she knows the value of propane out on the farm.

I spoke to her about the mission of the GPGA which she says is to bring together the marketers and suppliers of propane to promote the use of the environmentally friendly fuel. That’s why they’ve built the big display building on the grounds of the show. She says it allows them a great opportunity to show farmers and others who want to live the country life all the options they have for using propane on their farm.

Overview of Sunbelt Ag Expo

Sunbelt Ag Expo OverviewI got an overview of Sunbelt Ag Expo today. By overview I mean from the control tower for this airport which was formerly a military airfield. I climbed up and took a few photos early today.

While I was up there I got out my FLIP (you can get them customized now) and shot a short video clip so you can see what it’s like. The old control tower makes a nice photo stand. I think we need to have one of these at all farm shows.

I’ve got a lot more for you from Sunbelt and will be posting them over the next couple days. The weather was “Chamber of Commerce” perfect today and probably will be on the closing day tomorrow.
