Our latest ZimmPoll asked the question, “What causes higher food prices?” Most people responding seem to believe it’s a combination of factors – 47%. That’s followed by higher gas/energy costs at 23%, speculators at 18%, ethanol at 9% and weather at 3%. I wonder how the response would compare to an audience for a general news website like Fox or CNN. What do you think?
Our new ZimmPoll is now live and asks the question, “How do farmers compare in social media use?” Let us know what you think and thanks for your your participation.
And if you have any questions you want to suggest for future ZimmPolls please let us know.
ZimmPoll is sponsored by Rhea+Kaiser, a full-service advertising/public relations agency.
Christopher Bell with the FFA Foundation said it was a good opportunity for the officers to visit an agricultural company that is making a difference in the world. “Novus has put a lot of emphasis on sustainability in agriculture and that’s becoming one of our big initiatives in the FFA is making sure that our 523,000 students are practicing sustainable agriculture,” he said.
“I’m very passionate about agriculture and it’s great to come here today and visit with people from Novus and see the passion that they have for making a difference in the agriculture industry,” said National FFA Secretary Landan Schaffert of Colorado, pictured on the right next to Christopher listening to Novus’ Jim Richards on the laboratory portion of the tour.
Shannon Norris of New Mexico, who serves as Western Region Vice President for FFA, is pursuing a career in agricultural communications and possibly a doctorate in ruminant nutrition so she was very interested in getting to know the people at Novus. “It’s interesting to see how the mission of the company is intertwined with the values of each individual employee,” she said.
Cow artist and veterinarian, Kathy Swift, is also a board member of the AgChat Foundation. We got to visit while I was in Gainesville, FL doing a little John Deere work. Our conversation is ZimmCast number 300! I guess that’s a milestone of sorts. You figure out how many years that is.
With the AgChat Foundation recently turning one year old, our visit was very timely. We talked about becoming agvocates and Kathy shares some of her experiences for people who want to become AgNerds. You can learn more about what Kathy does on the Cow Art And More Blog. And follow her on Twitter.
Thank you to the Panera lady who took our photo!

I have a pantry filling up with mason jars. And I have a brain filling up with ideas on what to put IN those mason jars. Applesauce? Rotel? Stewed tomatoes? Salsa?
Before there were mason jars, there were clay pots for preserving. My grandmother’s grandma used these to store pickles and kraut in. They had loose lids, so there was no need for a wax seal or a pressure cooker. These, too, came from the Macomb Pottery company.
I much prefer the mason jars because of the clear glass. You can see what you’re reaching for when you get it off the shelf. And, it makes for a colorful pantry.
By way of recording photos and a little blurb about each item, I seem to be preserving a small piece of history. It amazes me sometimes how many generations back these items go. They’re valuable to their owners right now because there’s a personal connection – a personal story behind each one, and they’re valuable to collectors. But once the owners are gone, does the value fade if there’s no story?

I was driving green with John Deere in Gainesville, FL this weekend. GreenSouth Equipment held a field party for customers and the public as part of the Drive Green Challenge tour.
One of the stars of the tour is the truck that travels across the country delivering some of the equipment that is displayed at scheduled events. I met this year’s driver, Brian Middleton, who has already been to more than 20 stops with a lot more to go. As you might imagine, he’s got some great anecdotes about driving this highway billboard: Interview with Brian Middleton
The 2011 Agri-Marketing Conference was one of the most well attended since 2000 according to Jenny Pickett. She says the official number is 1,206 registered.

It’s not a bad thing to have some white space on your calendar. In fact, Juliet Funt, thinks you should actually schedule some. She was our closing speaker at the Agri-Marketing Conference with a session titled, “Overcommitted, Overwhelmed and Over It! Success Skills for the Blisteringly Busy.” Juliet is the daughter of Allen Funt, Candid Camera, and is an entertaining speaker.
Juliet helps people slow down and prioritize. One of the main things she wants people to think about is keeping more white space on their calendar. She’s writing a book on this. Listen to some more suggestions she has: Interview with Juliet Funt
People told me why they go to the Brownfield Party at the Agri-Marketing Conference. Now let’s hear why Brownfield puts on the party.
I spoke with Anita Vanderwert, National Sales Director, pictured on the left. Anita says the party allows them to get together to have a good time and celebrate working in this great industry of agriculture. She says people are very upbeat and the markets are sure contributing to that feeling right now. Listen to what else Anita has to say: Interview with Anita Vanderwert
The mission of the Missouri Colleges Fund is to acquire resources to help educate students at 16 member private liberal arts colleges in the state. President Mike Backer says they do that mainly through donations from companies like Novus. “Their first gift to the Missouri Colleges Fund was a check for student scholarships, but after they handed me the check, they said ‘what else can we do?’” Mike said. “This science day gives the students an opportunity to get out of the classroom and get more information about what they can do with their degree after they leave school.”
Each year, the Fund provides Novus with a book that includes student bios and photos and thank you cards, which Mike is shown here presenting to Dr. Joyce Cacho, Chief Sustainability Officer for Novus.

So, what did you do after the Brownfield Party? Hopefully you stopped in to the After-Party hosted by Rhea+Kaiser. Midnight in the Hyatt Lobby was where it was at.
After donning your After-Party hat you just headed up the escalator to the restaurant where hot, steaming and syrupy, sticky pancakes awaited. I made it and was really glad since I realized about half way through the Brownfield Party that I hadn’t eaten since lunch! Mmm, mmm. Thank you Rhea+Kaiser!
What’s the best party at the Agri-Marketing Conference? The Brownfield Party! I know, I’m biased. I was the host for a number of years once upon a time and Brownfield Ag News is my sponsor this week here at the event.
Well, last night we had a big time at PBR Big Sky. There are a lot of photos in the photo album and I think you’ll enjoy them. This is the Brownfield team. They worked hard last night but that was just helping make sure everyone was having fun. We had a great band and there was some bull riding too.
And ZimmComm Google Juice was enjoyed by all. It was one of the best NAMA Connection Point shows ever. At least in my opinion. Thanks to all of you who stopped by to say hi and visit a while. We’ll be doing it again next year.

It was a loud and exciting time during the NAMA student awards at the Agri-Marketing Conference. There are just too many to keep track and list them all here.
So I’ll just make note of the fact that the Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo chapter won the Student Marketing Competition.

I spoke with Roger afterward. He says he feels humbled and honored. He’s says the ag industry is a big family and he owes the award to a lot of people. He says NAMA has connected him to a lot of good people. Listen to our conversation: Roger Reierson Interview
Students from private colleges around Missouri are having a chance to check out what kinds of career opportunities await someone with a background in science and a passion for agriculture at the third “Science in Action: A Foundation for Dynamic Careers” sponsored by Novus International and the Missouri Colleges Fund.
About 20 students, teachers and advisors gathered for a little social last night near Novus headquarters in St. Charles and got to know a little more about each other and Novus. Dr. Scott Carter, Novus’ global poultry market manager, told them about his background and journey through academia into the world of global animal nutrition. “I have a PhD in nutrition and biotechnology and a BS degree in biochemistry,” Scott told them. “In agriculture we’re doing something very important. We’re feeding a hungry world and that’s going to be even more important in the future.”
In this week's program Chuck talks with David Armano, Global Innovation and Integration.
David conducted a presentation on delivering expert opinion via social media to an audience at the start of International Poultry Expo week. He's got some great information about who consumers trust and how you can use today's consumer behavior to help communicate your message.
