Soybean Marketing Manager Malin Westfall is “soy excited” about the new promotion. “It’s really an opportunity for our customers to tell their story,” said Westfall. “We want to hear the great things that the Liberty Link system and Liberty herbicide is doing on their farm to help them control their resistant and tough-to-control weeds.”

The LibertyLink Real Yield Game offers growers the chance to win prizes while playing an animated game to defeat tough-to-control weeds. Growers get to virtually spray soybean fields with Liberty® herbicide and see how the LibertyLink system provides superior control. Growers can instantly win a 2015 John Deere® Combine or a one-year supply of LibertyLink soybeans and Liberty herbicide, and every play gets an entry to win a one-year lease on a 2015 John Deere® Tractor. And every time the game is played, Bayer CropScience will make a contribution to FFA on the state level.

And Westfall says you will be hearing a lot about LibertyLink and the Real Yield Game throughout this harvest season. “We’re looking at a social campaign, as well as print and radio,” said Westfall. “We’re going from North Dakota to the south Delta from the East Coast to the western Plains. It’s really exciting to hear all the different stories from growers. ” Interview with Malin Westfall, Bayer CropScience

Liberty product manger David Tanner says they are also “soy excited” about the expanding use of the Liberty Link system nationwide. “We have about 60 million Liberty Link-enabled acres across corn, soybeans, cotton, canola – and we are just seeing that growth continue,” said Tanner. “We’ve seen great yields with the Liberty Link soybeans and we’re seeing great weed control with Liberty.”

Growth has been so significant that Bayer recently announced plans to invest $50 million in upgrades to production capacity at the plant that produces Liberty herbicide in Michigan. “We increasing our supply capacity in Muskegon, as well as Mobile, Alabama,” Tanner said.

Farmers are helping tell the story of agriculture through a new exhibit at the Saint Louis Science Center. The Missouri Farm Bureau (MFB) Foundation for Agriculture presented a check for $250,000 to the Science Center on September 11, 2015, for use in developing the new exhibit set to open in the summer of 2016. The donation was part of a larger donation of more than half a million dollars made by Missouri and Illinois Farm Bureaus.

“Education has always played a key role in Farm Bureau and the Saint Louis Science Center Agriculture Exhibit is an integral part of our transition to looking toward the future,” said MFB President Blake Hurst.

“We are grateful to the Illinois and Missouri Farm Bureaus, not only for their generous financial support, but for their commitment to helping us tell the story of food, the science and technology of how we grow food and move crops from field to table,” said Bert Vescolani, President and CEO of the Saint Louis Science Center. “Through this partnership, we can help connect our visitors to the farming community around us and understand the vital role our region plays in providing the food we eat and the challenges and responsibility to provide for our country and the rest of the world.”

“We look forward to working with our friends at Illinois Farm Bureau and the Saint Louis Science Center to share the success story of modern production agriculture and help us tell a story that incorporates equal parts perseverance, innovation, dedication and optimism,” Hurst said.

#FarmProgressShow Powered by Dieselex Gold

Cindy Zimmerman

fps-gmk-dieselexThe gold standard for diesel is the fuel that powered the engines at the 2015 Farm Progress Show – as it has for many shows before.

“We’re happy to do that to get our fuel in the equipment to show what it can do,” said Randy Moore with the GROWMARK FS Energy Division of the Dieselex Gold brand.

“Dieselex Gold is a premium diesel fuel,” says Moore. “More horsepower, cleaner burning engines, and more fuel efficient are the biggest advantages of using it.”

GROWMARK FS is so confident that Dieselex® Gold is the best fuel to power and protect engines that they offer the Dieselex Gold challenge. Simply purchase Dieselex Gold and compare it to your current diesel. If it doesn’t deliver superior fuel efficiency, engine starts, horsepower and more, they will reimburse you the difference in price between your fuel and ours. Click here for more details.

Soy-backed Mats Lighten Pentagon’s Environmental Footprint

John Davis

PentagonEntryMat2Soybeans are making the Pentagon a greener place. The United Soybean Board (USB) says the building now greets its employees and 100,000 annual visitors with 108 entry mats that use an environmentally friendly soybean-based material on the backs of those mats.

After [a] 2010 pilot [project], the Pentagon contracted with EcoPathTM in 2011 to replace 82 mats at various entrances with new ones made with soy backing. These new mats performed so well that when it came time to replace the original 82 mats, the Pentagon contracted with Signature Accord to again purchase the EcoPathTM soy-backed mats. The Pentagon recycled the old mats, and added the soy-backed mats to 26 new locations in the building.

Use of the entry mats supports the Presidential Executive Order: Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade (EO 13693). Issued in March 2015, the EO complements the laws that Congress enacted for the federal government to set the pace for the nation by buying biobased products, such as those made with soy. It requires federal agencies to include biobased products in at least 95% of all contract actions. Agencies must also set specific annual targets for the number and dollar value of contracts awarded that require the use of biobased products…

USB, the soybean checkoff overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, brought the EcoPathTM mats to the attention of the Pentagon Environmental Office (PEO) and the Pentagon Building Management Office (PBMO). PBMO had identified performance issues with the mats being used in the building and agreed to work with PEO and USB to test the new mats. The old mats often curled around the edges and frequently moved out of place. With EcoPathTM mats, the Pentagon’s experience was that the mats do not curl and are less likely to move. Staff report that they have had no trips or falls since the mats were installed, plus they have the added benefit of being made from environmentally preferable materials.

In addition to being greener environmentally, the mats save some green in the form of dollars saved. Prior to installation of the EcoPathTM mats, the Pentagon “rented” mats that were removed for cleaning and replaced every two weeks. Because the new mats with the biobased backing lasted for years, they save your tax dollars.

CropLife America Selects Green Thumb Winner

Kelly Marshall

CropLifeAmericaAfter a month-long Twitter contest, CropLife America (CLA) is pleased to announce the winner of the Green Thumb Challenge.  Jennie Schmit, @FarmGirlJen, has won an Apple Watch for her submission of her green thumb–literally!  The challenge was for advocates to paint their thumbs green and post a creative shot on Twitter.  Many contestants submitted thumbs painted like farm animals, at a fair, working on the farm, and many other inspired ideas, but Schmit’s is truly original.  Her photo captures her thumb inside a green tomato in a field red ripe tomatoes and the caption “@CropLifeAmeria 30+ tons of tomatoes per acre (preferably not free)! #GreenThumbContest.”

“So many people are involved in the process of getting healthy food from the farm to your plate,” stated Jay Vroom, president and CEO of CLA. “The Green Thumb Challenge helped people from across the literal food chain unite to support the many food production methods that growers use today. A recent report from the United Nations showed that the number of people experiencing hunger has decreased by 795 million people over the past 25 years, despite exponential population growth.1 The crop protection industry supports the continual development of herbicide and other crop protection technology to make sure we can produce healthy food for all in a way that preserves our land for future generations.”

In celebration of the conclusion of the Green Thumb Challenge, CLA is making a $5,000 donation to the Food Recovery Network (FRN), an organization that connects students across the country to fight food waste and hunger. Through the work of the Food Recovery Network, 814,325 pounds of food have been donated to people who are hungry.

“Food Recovery Network is pleased to have been a part of the Green Thumb Challenge to help educate the public about our food system and to jumpstart thinking about how and what we grow, eat and throw away. Through coordination, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability, we can get healthy food to everyone and reduce our impact on the environment in the process” states Regina Northouse, FRN’s executive director. “We need to work together to make food production more efficient and sustainable, by implementing practices such as food recovery and food waste reduction, in order to continue to reduce hunger worldwide.”

America’s farmers are becoming ever more efficient in food production, using less land and fewer resources.  You can read more about sustainability efforts at www.CropLifeAmerica.org.

NCGABASFThe National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) and BASF Corporation are teaming up to hand out ag scholarships. This news release from NCGA says they are now accepting applications for five $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in an agriculture-related field during the 2016-17 school year.

“The future of agriculture as an industry depends upon keeping our best and brightest interested in ag careers,” said Tom Haag, chairman of NCGA’s Grower Services Action Team. “As a part of our commitment to the industry’s future, NCGA partners with BASF to offer scholarships to help tomorrow’s leaders reach their educational goals. This program is an investment in not only their future but also our own.”

Applicants for the NCGA William C. Berg Academic Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship Program must be entering at least their second undergraduate year or any year of graduate study, and they or a parent or legal guardian must be an NCGA member. Scholarship applications must be postmarked on or before December 11, 2015.

Scholarship winners will be announced in early 2016 and will receive, along with a parent or guardian, free travel and lodging to attend the 2016 Commodity Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana, to be recognized at the NCGA Banquet and have the opportunity to learn more about modern agriculture.
