Neon Blue Bash

Chuck Zimmerman

Neon BlueLocal blues band favorite Neon Blue performed for NAFB once again last night.

The Blues Bash has been around for years. I seem to remember being one of several people who emptied our pockets of cash at the first one to keep them playing for some extra hours. I did not stay to the end to see if I would have to do it again though.

The activity here at the convention kind of got off to a slower start than yesterday. I’m just guessing that the Blues Bash had a little bit to do with it.

Pink Tractor Model

Chuck Zimmerman

Pink Tractor ModelThe annual NAFB Foundation Auction was a great success and Leah Guffey, WFMB worked very hard to help make it so. In fact, she even rode the pink tractor around the whole room to entice bids for this item.

I don’t know what the record amount raised in an auction is but I know that Cyndi Young who organized this year’s auction was all smiles. Feel free to post the results in comments if you know them.

Greg Akagi is New NAFB VP

Chuck Zimmerman

Greg AkagiThe new Vice President of NAFB is Greg Akagi, Kansas Agriculture Network. That means he’ll automatically ascend to President in 2 years. Here’s Greg in action at Trade Talk.

I spoke with Greg after the election and he’s really moved by the confidence the membership has in him and grateful for their vote. One of the things he’s looking forward to accomplishing is the implementation of the new strategic plan. When I asked him what he thinks of the future of farm broadcasting he says it’s going to be tough but having an organization to help means that members can work together to continue the success that farm radio has had for so long.

NAFB President

Chuck Zimmerman

Pam FretwellOur NAFB President until tonight is Pam Fretwell, WTAD. She’s had a great year leading the organization through some major issues like the creation of a 5-year Strategic Plan. Here’s Pam at the annual member’s meeting.

Afterward I spoke with her to get her feelings as she’s about to become past-president and I’m sure she’s looking forward to some time off from NAFB. Pam also sees a bright future for farm broadcasting.

  • Kip Cullers of Purdy, Mo., outdid himself by growing an astounding 154.7 bushels of soybeans per acre this year, beating his own world record established last year with 139.39 bushels per acre. He accomplished his record-breaking production by planting Pioneer® 94M80 soybeans on an irrigated and conventionally-tilled field near Stark City, Mo. Cullers attributes an intensive plant management program to his success.
  • Dow AgroSciences has introduced new Technology for Traits™ portfolio of herbicides designed to deliver high performance weed control in herbicide-tolerant corn or soybean production systems. SureStart™, Sonic™ and Durango® DMA® herbicides make up the portfolio. SureStart and Sonic are designed to help protect the yield and profit potential of herbicide-tolerant corn and soybeans during early developmental stages from weed competition due to delayed glyphosate applications and the growing number of glyphosate-resistant and -tolerant weeds. They are ideal partners with the company’s new glyphosate, Durango DMA.
  • The Missouri Soybean Association applauds Congress for its resounding decision to override President Bush’s veto of the Water Resources Development Act, which authorizes much-needed improvements to waterways that are vital to the transport of U.S. soybeans. Passage of the bill marks the first time in a decade since Congress has passed a bill over a presidential veto. The House of Representatives voted 361-54 and the Senate voted 79-14 to override the veto.
