Brownfield NAMA Tradition Continues

Cindy Zimmerman

nama15-brownfieldIt was yet another memorable Brownfield party at the annual Agri-Marketing Conference last week in Kansas City. Can you believe it’s been 25 years? What was your favorite Brownfield party over the years? I’d have to say it was the Red Solo cup year at Howl at the Moon.

Because this year was a milestone, Cyndi Young and Tom Steever gave a special rendition of the Hank Williams Jr classic “Family Tradition” – it’s a Brownfield Tradition!

Click here for all of the lyrics and watch the video below.

All the NAMA partiers have been a real close family
But lately, some of my friends just can’t stay up as late as me
I guess it’s because we have a 25 year connection
Lord, tonight let’s just all celebrate our Brownfield tradition

They get on me and want to know
John, why do you we drink? Why can’t we roll smoke?
Why must we live out the contracts we wrote?
Over and over, everybody makes our predictions
So if we have fun, we’re just carrying on an old Brownfield tradition

I am very proud of the Brownfield name
And for twenty five years we must say we are glad you came.
Stop and think it over, put yourself in my position
If we get drunk and sing all night long, it’s a Brownfield tradition!

NAMA Agribusiness Leader of Year – Clint Lewis

Chuck Zimmerman

Clint LewisDuring the 2015 Agri-Marketing Conference the National Agri-Marketing Association presented the Agribusiness Leader of the Year Award to Clint Lewis, Executive Vice President and President, U.S. Operations, Zoetis.

This award, which is NAMA’s highest honor, recognizes outstanding leadership in private, public or academic service and is conferred each year to a senior agribusiness executive who not only exemplifies excellence in agribusiness but has also made significant contributions to the industry.

Zoetis is the world’s largest animal health company, established when Pfizer announced that its animal health business would become an independent company. Mr. Lewis helped launch the entity and now oversees the management of the livestock (cattle, pork, and poultry) and companion animal (small animal and equine) businesses in the United States and is also responsible for leading the global genetics business.

Clint says he defines the business he runs as from the “petables to the edibles – every livestock operation regardless of size and complexity.”

House Votes to Kill Death Tax

Cindy Zimmerman

adrian-smithBy a vote of 240-179 largely along party lines, the U.S. House voted Thursday to repeal the federal estate tax, better known by opponents as the “death tax.”

Co-sponsor Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) told his colleagues that repealing the tax is a top priority for farmers and ranchers in his state and around the nation. “Agriculture, particularly raising cattle and crops such as corn, is a land and capital intensive process…their assets are the land and equipment they use to help feed our nation and the world,” said Smith.

Rep. Adrian Smith on repeal of death tax

Democrats like Jim McDermott of Washington state argued against the repeal, saying that it would only benefit the very wealthiest of farmers, using an example given by the Republicans of a 15,000 acre Texas farm. “That’s a five by five square mile farm, that’s more than the island of Manhattan,” said McDermott. “A farm at the very top of the income scale experiences unprecedented wealth and prosperity.”

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) said that was a farm that had been in a family for five generations. “It started small and they built up over years and years,” said Brady, noting that the heirs had to sell off two-thirds of it to pay the taxes in order to keep some of it in the family.

While the bill has little chance of passage in the Senate and faces a presidential veto threat, most agricultural organizations were pleased to see the House action.

NAMA Marketer of the Year Paul Redhage

Chuck Zimmerman

Paul RedhageHave to admit to being surprised that former NAMA president and life-long agri-marketing professional Paul Redhage had never been named Marketer of the Year – but he is now!

Paul just retired from a long and distinguished career in January and has been taking some well deserved grandpa time after 30 years in the business, starting with Kenrick Advertising in 1985, moving to Brighton, then BASF and finally topping that with 15 years with FMC Corporation.

As a senior judge for the Student NAMA Marketing Competition for many years, Paul was passionate about mentoring young professionals for the industry he loves – and an industry that loves him.

Thanks, Paul! Now go enjoy those grand kids.

Jamie Johansen

nama15-143-editedNew Holland is spending the entire year celebrating 120 years for the next generation. At this year’s Agri-Marketing Conference, they have once again equipped all attendees with little tractors challenging us all to tweet pictures using the #TractTweet120. The contest ends tomorrow and the most creative will win a New Holland branded iPad. I caught up with New Holland’s Rebecca Gunderson during the Connection Point to learn more about their involvement with the event.

“This year we decided to have a little more presence at NAMA. We have a booth in the Connection Point because it’s a great way to meet with ag marketers and others in the industry as well as connect with all the student groups that are here.”

Congress Moves on Fast Track

Cindy Zimmerman

trade-wordsBipartisan, bicameral Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation was introduced today in Congress that would put negotiations for new trade agreements that could benefit agriculture on the fast track.

The Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015 introduced by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), and House Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) outlines negotiating objectives that must be followed by any administration when conducting trade talks while also increasing transparency by requiring that Congress see the full details of trade agreements well before they are signed.

“We look for quick action by Congress to provide the President with the authority to pursue agreements that open markets for America’s farmers, ranchers and agribusiness,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “U.S. agriculture’s interests are best served by ensuring America is at the table with strong negotiating authority.”

American Farm Bureau Federation president Bob Stallman says TPA is critical to expanding markets for agriculture. “TPA streamlines negotiations and strengthens our position at the bargaining table,” Stallman said. “We will cede potential markets and economic leadership to our competitors if we cannot negotiate and ratify trade agreements through TPA.”

National Corn Growers Association president Chip Bowling urged Congress to quickly pass the bill. “If we remove trade barriers and expand our access to global markets, American corn and livestock farmers can do even more,” said Bowling. “Trade Promotion Authority is critical to ensuring farmers get the best possible deal in trade agreements.”

Taking the opposite view, National Farmers Union (NFU) President Roger Johnson called the bill “a one way ticket to bigger trade deficits, more lost jobs and more economic devastation to America’s family farmers and ranchers.” Johnson says NFU favors “trade policy that prioritizes domestic food production and goods supply chains in lieu of policies that put family farmers and ranchers out of business and send some of our best jobs, and the dreams of America’s middle class, overseas.”

The administration has been strongly promoting the need for Congress to grant TPA to the president to move forward with negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP).

Prior to agreeing to the deal, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing on trade priorities featuring testimony from administration officials, including Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and US Trade Representative Michael Froman. Listen to or download audio from some of their remarks below.

Rural America Keeps Growing Thanks to Community Banks

John Davis

ICBAApril is Community Banking Month, and the Independent Community Bankers of America® (ICBA) is celebrating the nation’s community banks for their unparalleled role in helping America grow by lending to local farmers, ranchers and agricultural enterprises and serving as financial first responders to the agricultural economy.

“Community banks are essential to the overall health and financial success of rural America because they provide an overwhelming share of credit to local farmers and ranchers,” said ICBA Chairman Jack Hartings, president and CEO of The Peoples Bank Co., Coldwater, Ohio. “Many community banks have been serving agricultural enterprises and family farms in their communities for more than 100 years. And because community banks are small business owners themselves, they are better able to serve their agricultural customers because they understand the local market first-hand and have highly specialized expertise in the agriculture business.”

Across the nation, community banks operate 52,000 locations, employ 700,000 Americans and hold $3.6 trillion in assets, $2.9 trillion in deposits and $2.4 trillion in loans to consumers, small businesses and the agricultural community.

Community banks have consistently been the largest provider of agricultural credit within the commercial banking sector and are often the catalysts for new and expanded business opportunities within their communities to ensure long-term economic viability and vitality. In fact, community banks provide $57 billion in agriculture loans.

“Community banks stimulate rural economies in a multitude of ways, including creating jobs, maintaining the local tax base and facilitating development of the infrastructure and public services necessary to keep rural communities vibrant,” Hartings said.

ICBA invites you to find your local bank using the group’s Community Bank Locator at www.banklocally.org. You can also follow the conversation on ICBA Community Banking Month, using the hashtag #BankLocally on Twitter.
