Winter Storage of GPS and Guidance Products

Melissa Sandfort

Insights WeeklyDecember is here and for most of the country that means that seasons are changing and the time for field work to wind down and machinery to be stored in the shed for winter has come. If you are in a part of the world where it feels like summer is never-ending, GPS storage may be the last thing on your mind. So for those of you who actually get to experience seasonal changes there is a proper way to store GPS equipment during the winter.

It is true GPS equipment especially receivers are designed to be weather resistant. However, if your equipment will be stored for an extended period of time it is recommended that you remove the hardware and take it to a more protected environment.

When the receivers and other equipment are removed it is also advised to dock the cabling so it is not exposed to the elements. In the case of the Ag Leader ParaDyme roof module use the provided dummy connectors on the roof rail. If you have one of the other Ag Leader receivers, it is best to remove the cable from the roof and store it in the cab. This will help prevent water and dust from entering the cable ends possibly damaging or allowing corrosion to take effect. Removing the cable can sometimes be difficult. If this is the case, wrapping the end in electrical tape will also do the trick.

Ag Leader also recommends removing displays and the combine grain flow sensor from the combine in the fall. This helps preserve the integrity of displays as well as prevents rodents from snacking on the potting material in the flow sensor.

If you have any questions about this or any other subject please do not hesitate to call Ag Leader’s tech support line at 515-232-5363.

Ag Ranks Low in Top Innovators List

Cindy Zimmerman

For the second year, the media organization Thompson Reuters has named its “Top 100 Global Innovators” and I received an email about the list headlined “Agriculture Industry is Innovating.”

“The Agriculture industry has a 1% representation with Monsanto making the list,” the press release says. “Last year Agriculture had 0% representation.”

So that means agricultural companies making the list went up by 100% since the first one – but really? Only one ag company on a list of 100 innovators? When I checked the entire list, I found a couple of other companies that could be classified as agricultural by having large agricultural divisions – DuPont, Dow and John Deere. DuPont and Dow are listed in the chemical industry, which indeed they are, and both made the list last year. John Deere is in the machinery category and was not on last year’s listing. The biggest industry segment of the companies making the list are in semiconductor and electrical and computer hardware, representing more than 30% of the list.

Thompson Reuters says the list was compiled using a system that focuses on companies responsible for generating a sizable amount of innovation. All organizations with 100 or more “innovative” patents from the most recent three years were included for consideration. Other factors include success of the patents, influence down the line and global adoption.

With all the innovations in seed technology, precision farming and crop protection, you would think that agriculture could make a better representation than just one percent of the top innovators in the world – or even 4% if you count the other three with ag interests. It’s not really that ag is not being counted, or that it is being hidden in companies that have a wide scope of interests. It seems like the answer may be that not enough time, effort and dollars are being invested in agriculture on a global scale, especially considering all the noise being made about nine billion people to feed by 2050. What do you think?

Vilsack to Host #AskUSDA Twitter Chat

Cindy Zimmerman

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will host a live Virtual Office Hours session next week on Twitter to answer questions on the important role of rural America to the national and global economy, increasing agricultural opportunities in U.S. communities, and the importance of passing a five-year Farm Bill.

According to USDA, Secretary Vilsack will answer Twitter queries such as:

• What are the emerging sectors in agriculture for new farmers and ranchers; where do I find them?
• In both rural and urban communities, what is the significance of the agricultural sector?
• I didn’t grow up on a farm. Are there other opportunities in agriculture besides farming that I should know about?

You can submit questions in advance to the @USDA Twitter account using the hashtag #AskUSDA.

Vilsack’s twitter chat will be on Monday, December 17, starting at 3:30 p.m. EDT

Asgrow 4P System and agSeedSelect

Chuck Zimmerman

During the 2012 NAFB Convention I spoke with Dan Kurdys, Asgrow Brand Manager. In a challenging year he says they had great harvest results with a greater than four bushel advantage over their competition. He attributes that to their “diverse germplasm pool, Genuity Roundup Ready trait and defensive and agronomic traits that are available to purchase.” Dan says they’ve developed the Asgrow 4P System, Plan, Plant, Protect and Perform, to give growers an edge in the soybean growing process.

Looking ahead to 2013 farmers can find the right Asgrow seed by using their agSeedSelect tool. This is available for your mobile device, either Apple iOS or Android.

No need to search through hundreds of pages to find the right seed for your field. agSeedSelect lets you create, store, email and print a seed guide tailored to your specific geography and crops. Featuring videos by our agronomists, the app provides detailed information on top products from Asgrow, DEKALB and Deltapine.

BASF Builds on Becker Underwood History

Cindy Zimmerman

In 1982, two friends named Roger Underwood and Jeff Becker started a little company that bore their names with a single product. Several acquisitions and 30 years later, Becker Underwood is a global leader in the development and commercialization of seed-applied biological products and is now part of the BASF Crop Protection family.

“It’s been quite a ride particularly over the last ten years,” said Peter Innes, who has been Chairman and CEO of Becker Underwood and now will be Global Senior Advisor to the BASF Crop Protection division with the acquisition. “We have a major strength in our technical expertise, in our innovation, we like to bring new and different products to the market.”

Peter says the acquisition will help bring those products to new markets, such as India and China. He talks about that and more in this interview from the ASTA 2012 CSS and Seed Expo last week: Interview with Peter Innes

Effective January 1, 2013, most businesses of Becker Underwood will join the newly established global business unit “Functional Crop Care” under BASF’s Crop Protection division, headed by Dr. Jürgen Huff, Senior Vice President. “With this new global business unit we want to offer farmers a complete and holistic portfolio consisting of seed treatment products, complemented by Becker Underwood’s biologicals portfolio,” said Jürgen. “In addition we’re going to add a part of the business which we call “Innovation Beyond Crop Protection” – projects and products aimed at water management and better nutrient management for plants.”

Jürgen has been with BASF since 1995 and was actually involved in leading a polymer laboratory when he joined the company. “We are very excited with the new Becker Underwood team to bring new great things to the market,” he said.

Do I Know You?

Melissa Sandfort

It’s been a while since I went on an AgWalk and my apologies. Life happened. Christmas is almost here and I’ve been busy with decorating, an Elf named “Rope” (trust me, I didn’t come up with that one), frozen horse water and oh yeah, work!

But I have to share this story with you. My husband recently had his company Christmas party in Omaha. While out and about, he ran into a gal who was in town for an ag conference and in the midst of their conversation, he shared with her what I do for work. Her response? “Forgive me if I seem a little star-struck right now but ‘I Know Her!’ I follow her on AgWired!”

Just call me The Pioneer Woman. Don’t I wish?? But that’s how honored I felt when someone recognized my name and said she reads my articles. (And it wasn’t my aunt this time!)

I don’t know the impact I’m having, if any, but what I do know is that I am always excited to meet new people and the farmers and ranchers out there who work hard every day so that I can still have a job that I love. For that I’m grateful.

“Iowa Gal” – if you’re out there and reading this, thank you. I promise to be more diligent in AgWalking.

Until we walk again …
