Scott is from North Carolina. That was some very fine roasted pork he was preparing for us at World Pork Expo last week!

In his area Scott says that although the challenges producers have in his area aren’t unique they are more accentuated than other areas due to higher costs for grain brought in from the midwest. “If in fact $7 to $8 grain costs in the midwest is a problem, $9 to $10 costs is even more of a problem on the east coast,” he says. For this reason Scott says the new Novus Accelerating Finishing Profitability program contains specific elements to help producers deal with challenges, especially on a regional basis. Scott Moore Interview

Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica (BIVI) hosted a media event on the last day of World Pork Expo that focused on Keeping Food Safe and Profits Growing.

Controlling enteric diseases caused by ileitis and Salmonella can help both keep food safe and pork producer profits growing. “Enteric diseases are sometimes below the threshold of detection,” said Kent Schwartz, DVM with Iowa State University. “Feed is the largest input into the cost of production and anything that comprises intestinal function has a propensity to cost money and among many other factors are infectious diseases.”

Dr. Schwartz recommends that producers keep good records on animals and determine whether they are achieving their potential. “Lawsonia and Salmonella are very common infections,” he said. “These agents can cause disease that are not necessarily visual but can impact feed to gain and we do have for those two agents very effective vaccines that can take them out of the equation.”

Listen to or download an interview with Dr. Schwartz here: Dr. Kent Schwartz

Dr. Kolb recommends producers get their vet involved and determine when exposure to Salmonella starts and make sure the vaccine gets in ahead of it.

Listen to or download an interview with Dr. Kolb here: John Kolb with BIVI

I learned this while speaking with Gary Hayen at last week’s World Pork Expo.

Gary is the global product business manager for the enzyme and fermentation products business area. I asked him to provide an overview of how important enzymes are for the feedstock industry. He says, “For cost efficiency and nutrient utilization, enzymes are going to play a key role in being able to help the producer obtain the efficiency and cost effectiveness they need.” Basically enzymes play a role in freeing up some of the energy and protein/nutrition values of feed ingredients that you wouldn’t get without using them. Gary provides some specific examples of how this works in my interview with him. He says that it’s a real growth opportunity in the coming years. Gary says that they can show an up to $3 return on each animal for use of enzymes. Gary Hayen Interview

Stephanie is now the global marketing manager for beef, dairy and pork for Novus International. She is also a past president of the National Agri-Marketing Association.

We talked about the new Novus Accelerating Finishing Profitability program that was announced during the show. Stephanie says this boils down to helping customers “take what they have and make it more profitable.” She says that Novus has created a step by step process that helps them figure out what their current needs are and how the products Novus offers can help them meet those needs. To get the help offered by Accelerating Finishing Profitability Stephanie recommends contacting a Novus representative, nutritionist or the Novus Pork website. Stephanie Gable Interview

We had some serious rain during the day yesterday, but it all cleared up just in time for the bands to start playing and the roasted hogs to come out. National Pork Producers Association CEO Neil Dierks says the expo was excellent this year, especially day one. “We haven’t heard the numbers yet, but we won’t be surprised if it’s not the best first day we’ve had for many, many years – even though it was 94 degrees and about 97 percent humidity,” he said.

Neil says producers are “reasonably pleased” with the current state of the industry, but concerned about issues facing them such as feed availability, getting trade agreements approved and government regulation, especially the proposed GIPSA rule.

I stopped by the BIVI exhibit at the trade show yesterday and talked with Tim Bettington (right), executive director of the company’s swine division and Randy Buller (left), senior associate director for the division.

“BI is very committed to the swine industry,” Tim told me. “We have several other species under our umbrella but the swine industry is the key one for us. We’ve grown up as a swine organization and globally swine is the number one sales driver for us.” Tim says they are in the process of completing an R&D facility in Germany that will complement the facility they have in Ames, Iowa that has been very successful in developing the company’s PRRS vaccine.

Randy says there is a great deal of interest among producers in the 3FLEX vaccine they introduced just last year. “It is the only product in the swine industry that mixes three vaccines in a similar platform,” said Randy. The 3FLEX consists of three vaccines: Ingelvac CircoFLEX®, Ingelvac MycoFLEX® and Ingelvac® PRRS MLV to address circa virus, mycoplasma, and PRRS in one shot.

With cries of “Fork More Pork” in different languages, the AP team really outdid itself this year. The company, which specializes in swine production equipment such as feeders, ventilation and flooring, has a different theme for their pig every year. Previous years have included Mexican Fiesta and Elvis, but this one will be hard to top.

Notice that the roast pig is sporting peace sign earrings and shooting a peace sign with its cloven hoof! The video shows just how much the AP folks really get into their theme.

The Korean ambassador to the United States says “time is running out” for Congress to approve pending free trade agreements and “the stakes are high.”

Ambassador Han Duk-soo was the keynote speaker at the National Pork Producers Council Strategic Investment Program luncheon at World Pork Expo on Thursday. He encouraged pork producers to “not let up” in urging Congress to ratify the FTA with South Korea, which is pending along with those for Colombia and Panama. “The disagreements in Washington that have delayed the FTA’s ratification are ironic, in that it enjoys almost unanimous support,” he noted. “America’s pork producers have been among the most vocal and active proponents of these agreements.”

Like those here in the U.S. who want to see the agreements passed, the ambassador is concerned that if they are not approved by end of summer, the presidential campaign will effectively delay them even longer.

Thanks to the efforts of the Pork Checkoff, pork producers now have a tool that will allow them to calculate their carbon footprint.

The “Live Swine Carbon Footprint Calculator” was unveiled today at World Pork Expo by the National Pork Board. Pork producers Randy Spronk of Minnesota (pictured) and Roy Henry of Kansas did the introduction, as well as Rick Ulrich with the University of Arkansas, which actually developed the program.

Randy was one of the first to test the carbon footprint calculator and shared what he learned with the media and later during an educational session with producers. “The impetus for this came from producers,” Randy said. “The original intent was to identify ‘hot spots’ for energy use, areas where they could have the most impact on cost of production.”

Randy says the calculator is very simple to use and clearly shows how inputs, such as feed, energy use, manure and pig performance, are all related to the carbon footprint of a barn. Due to privacy issues and the tremendous size of the computer program, it is only available to producers via disc and cannot be downloaded from the web. Copies are being distributed here at World Pork Expo and can be ordered on-line at pork.org/sustainability.

This was done with a group of agricultural reporters in their World Pork Expo tent.

High feed ingredient costs are no longer a temporary blip on pork producers’ radar screens. Instead, lofty corn and soybean prices seem to be here to stay and thus require a long-term strategic solution aimed at helping producers get the greatest possible returns from all their nutritional inputs.

The new Accelerating Finishing Profitability program from Novus International is designed to be one of these strategic solutions. The program helps optimize nutrition and delivers tangible results to the performance and profitability of a pork operation during the grow-finish phase.

Our announcement panel included (l-r) Brad Lawrence, Novus Technical Manager, Pork Business Team, International; Randy Anderson, Novus Senior World Area Director, North America and Mark Bertram, Nutrition & Production Consultant, First Choice Livestock. I spoke with each of these panelists after the presentation and have those interviews posted below. Here is the full presentation to the media: Novus Panel - Accelerating Finishing Profitability

Randy says “We’ve been working on this for a couple of years already. It’s about how can we help you understand how to nutritionally feed your animals differently that will allow you to manage your total costs and your total performance. Ultimately it’s about working with our customers to figure out how to manage their total profitability.” Randy Anderson Interview

Brad says the takeaway message this morning is “allowing producers to challenge the paradigms that they’ve had that have limited their ingredient selections to corn and soy. Instead of saying this is all we can use challenging that paradigm and saying what are the limitations to use and what blend of nutritional technologies will allow you to overcome those paradigms, overcome those challenges and improve the returns you see to your operations by opening up a broader range of ingredient options.” Brad Lawrence Interview

Mark says what the Accelerating Finishing Profitability program is about is “utilizing the technology that Novus has developed and applying those technologies to current industry issues and allowing us to, for example, increase the utilization of some of the by-product feed ingredients that may have been limiting in the past and focusing on decreasing feed costs.” Mark Bertram Interview

“It’s a very good opportunity to have a peer-to-peer meeting,” said Dr. Laura Batista with the BIVI PRRS Solution Team, who says there are two projects underway now in Iowa of the 25 nationwide. “More and more it is countywide, rather than the whole state.”

Laura says producers are starting to see a return on investment by implementing the PRRS control program.

Listen to or download Laura’s PRRS ARC update here: Dr. Laura Batista

BIVI’s Dr. Reid Phillips says the PRRS ARC project is a work in progress, so meetings like this are very important. “It’s an opportunity for the working groups to get together and share their information, identify areas of challenges and restraints, and that’s a valuable thing.”

Reid talked about the value of communication and coordination, as well as research that can help with PRRS control.

With members of his family, he also raises corn, soybeans and wheat on 2,000 acres in west central Missouri.

Everett takes the helm of the 15 member pork board as the checkoff celebrates its silver anniversary and anticipates golden opportunities for the industry. “I think we live in some very challenging times but we also live in some very exciting times in the pork industry,” Everett said during the NPB press conference at World Pork Expo Wednesday.

He was pleased to announce that the board voted to spend some extra advertising dollars this year. “We’ve seen first hand the results of the new campaign ‘Pork Be Inspired’ and with some additional funds we were able to vote to continue this project into the fall with an additional $5 million to be put into the Be Inspired campaign.”

“People who already eat pork just have to eat a little more, and that’s our target audience,” he added.

The pork board also added $1.2 million for export marketing efforts and another $265,000 is allocated for cooking temperature education. The pork industry is really excited about new cooking guidelines for pork just released last week by USDA officially confirming that the other white meat is perfectly safe when cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

Carney says they hope to get the FTAs passed before summer recess or right after. “We’re frustrated but yet we’re hopeful we’re gonna get it done,” he said.

But I have done some major sampling today at the World Pork Expo. This little display of Plowboys BBQ was found in the Boehringer Ingelheim tent and they were really good. I also sampled ribs in the Novus International tent, Pork Network tent and the Pork Checkoff media lunch. They were all good but I give my personal award to the Pork Checkoff. They served Mediterranean Back Ribs cooked in a pomegranate sauce. They were fall off the bone tender.

The Pork Checkoff is sponsoring the Producers Opportunity for Revenue and Knowledge (PORK) Academy here at the Iowa State Fairgrounds too.

By the way. If you want that Mediterranean Back Ribs recipe you can find it right here on the Pork Checkoff website.

Welcoming the media was Doug Wolf, President, National Pork Producers Council. Doug is a producer from Lancaster, WI. He says there are over 450 exhibitors from eleven different countries and attendees from 33 countries. He says they’re expecting over 20,000 producers to attend.

Attendees will find business seminars on profitability, animal health and current issues. They can see the newest products, services and technologies offered by more than 450 commercial exhibitors. They will have the opportunity to watch junior showmen and swine breeders exhibit some of the best market hogs and breeding animals available, as they compete for top prizes. And throughout the event, they can feast on great food and enjoy family entertainment.

I can attest to feasting on pork. At the media reception we had about six different pork choices! Here’s a welcome message from Doug: Doug Wolf Interview

Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome … better known as PRRS … has changed the way farmers raise hogs, and attendees of the Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) seminars at the recent World Pork Expo were able to hear how biosecurity, vaccination and tracking of PRRS are keys to controlling the disease.

At the session I was able to attend, Dr. John Waddell of the Sutton Veterinary Clinic in Sutton, Nebraska, told the group that biosecurity needed to be addressed on a daily basis.

“You’ve got your risks of direct introduction, and you’ve got lots of ways you can indirectly introduce virus or disease into a herd.” He said you have to believe that you can track the disease and then use discipline and accountability to keep from introducing disease into swine herds. Dr. John Waddell Interview

Dr. Michael Murtaugh, a noted professor of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Minnesota explained to the people attending the session there are certain indirect benefits to vaccinating a swine herd.

“Vaccination can reduce the amount of PRRS virus in an area, which would reduce the risks of infection.” And mass vaccinations can help drive out a variety of PRRS viruses. With fewer overall viruses, the better the chances of overall PRRS control. But Murtaugh also cautioned the audience that there are limited diagnostic capabilities. “You need to understand the strengths and limitations of your tools to use them the best way possible.” Dr. Michael Murtaugh

One tool is producers’ arsenals is a system actually developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and donated to veterinarians called PADRAP … Production Animal Disease Risk Assessment Program, an online risk assessment. Dr. Derald Holtkamp, an assistant professor at Iowa State University, explained vets have been able to use PADRAP as a communication tool to ensure a coordinated approach to controlling PRRS is used.

“A number of these things veterinarians have been talking to their clients about for years. But what PADRAP does is give them a more systematic way to do it.” Holtkamp said PADRAP also helps producers decide what method they need to use to eliminate PRRS in their herds.
Dr. John Waddell interview wpx10-bi-holtkamp.mp3

All three agree that PRRS has changed the way swine production and biosecurity is handled, and it is a costly disease. “But I think we’re going to win this battle,” said Waddell.

Swine health is of the utmost importance for producers and the use of antibiotics has often been used to keep the pigs healthy. Yet a few years ago, the European Union passed legislation that limited the use of antibiotics for animal health. Since then, many of these producers have been using organic acids to help improve pig health with great success.

Here is the U.S. similar antibiotic legislation is being considered so I sat down with Helen Stebbens, Ph.D. in Pig Nutrition for Novus Europe, to learn more about the pending legislation and what it would mean for American pig producers should it pass. Stebbens has been working on developing organic acids for pig health and she told me right away that in Europe, the producers have not only survived but their levels of production are very good, in part due to the integration of organic acids.

“Many are using organic acids in young pigs,” explained Stebbens. “They are very effective for young pigs where their digestive system is not very mature and organic acids really help to boost the acidity within the stomach of the young pigs and forms a barrier of pathogens toward entry.” Ultimately, she said, this helps to keep the pig’s gut healthy.

Keeping the pig’s gut healthy lessens the needs for things like antibiotics and also improves the ROI for the producer. Stebbens noted that there has been a good adoption of the technique among producers in the U.S. and she believes that they will find it a very cost effective option in maintaining gut health. She also stressed that organic acids do not need to be used all the time but only during critical times of stress such as when the pigs are moving house or units.

There are many Novus nutritional experts that are available to work with producers who are interested in learning more about organic acids, and encouraged them to contact Novus. You can learn more about organic acids at www.novusint.com.

One of the international visitors who stopped by the Novus tent at WPX was Leonardo Cuevas, a consultant from Chile, who said the event provided him with lots of new information to bring back to his country. “I think we have to improve our industry, in nutrition, minerals and vitamins, especially in the sow and breeder aspect,” Leonardo told me. “Also artificial insemination, environmental control and management of mortality, composting, etc.”

He says this was his third visit to Pork Expo. “I would recommend for everybody to come here. It’s a good investment for producers.”

Leonardo Cuevas interview wpx10-novus-chile.mp3

It’s also a good investment for exhibitors who offer products and services to help producers be more efficient and profitable. Novus International Global Marketing Manager Felipe Navarro says Novus is in about 80 countries, so it World Pork Expo is a great place for them to meet with their customers in many countries. “The only two areas we are missing in this show are China and Asia Pacific. This is related to the business situation, they’re not doing very well right now, but hopefully they will get to the same point where we are now in North America and Latin America where people are starting to make some profit again,” Felipe said.

He says that there are opportunities and challenges for a company like Novus marketing globally, with different regulations, production methods and diseases from country to country, but all producers want to increase performance, which is where Novus is focusing right now. “Especially sow performance,” Felipe said. “Because by working on the sow, which is the source of your revenue at the end of the day, they produce the piglets that you will raise to market weight.”

Novus representatives spent lots of time visiting with producers about their specific products that include chelated trace minerals, enzymes, mycotoxin technologies and anti-oxidants.

While I was at the World Pork Expo (WPX) last week, I watched a few of these cute little pigs race to the finish line. The motivation to race? A Fig Newton. I must say, these are my kinds of pigs! The pigs are trained at the Hedricks Exotic Animal Farm in Nickerson, Kansas and travel all over the country to entertain crowds.

The pig races at WPX are a fan favorite and the stands were full for most of the races. I watched three heats the first being an all female heat called the “Powder Puff Derby.” Representing the red team was Britney Squeals, the white team featured Lindsey Loham, the blue team Hamma Montana, and on the yellow team Miss Piggy. And the winner was….you’ll just have to watch the video to find out who won this heat. And if you get a chance, don’t miss the racing pigs coming to a track near you.

Looking for a way to learn strategies to improve your feed quality? Then look no further than your computer. On June 24, 2010, WATT is offering a free “WATT Online Feed Forum.” This virtual forum offers researchers, producers and executives an opportunity to learn about the latest research and products that will not only improve your feed quality but also improve your bottom line. The forum will cast a wide net with the audience but offer a narrow focus with the presentations.

I caught up with Jeff Miller, the Director of Strategy of Sales and Marketing in the Novus International booth during World Pork Expo to learn more about this virtual feed forum. Novus is a supporter of this event. He explained, “This is synonymous with a live trade show but its on the internet. So we’re putting five presentations on in which an audience of knowledge seekers from over 100 countries from around the world have signed up to attend these presentations and they also have the ability to mingle with their colleagues from all over the world. And of course they have the opportunity to go to sponsor booths that are also in the virtual event.”

The presentation topics include:

Mycotoxin Control (currently mycotoxins are a huge problem for swine farmers)

New thoughts on feeding the modern laying hen

Feed manufacturing workshop

How to feed high yielding dairy cows to maintain milk yield and fertility

Feed ingredients for sustainable aquaculture

Although the presentations are pre-recorded, event day participants will have the opportunity to join a live Q&A session with the speakers. However, if you can’t make the live event, the feed forum will be archived for three months.

Miller said that while they appreciate being at live events, his company strongly feels that there is a global audience of people who are looking for knowledge and education in any channel available. “This virtual trades show platform is another channel for professionals to get quality information about agribusiness,” concluded Miller.

Listen below to my full interview with Jeff. You can register for the free feed forum and see the archive of the Watt Poultry Nutrition & Health Forum, at www.wattevents.com.

New from Novus International at the World Pork Expo this year was the Equalizing Sow Performance program designed to optimize herd production.

I talked with Randy Anderson (left), who is the National Pork Business Sales Manager for Novus, about the sow program, which he says is basically a combination of their MINTREX® and ZORIEN® products. “We’re feeding the sows through gestation and lactation to help optimize performance,” Randy said. “We’re improving the feet and legs, the joint health of the animal, helping them to walk better, last longer in the herd – so basically we’re improving the longevity of the sow. And in doing that, we’re also getting a reproductive benefit of increasing the live born of the sow.”

Randy says they officially launched the program at World Pork and got good feedback from producers. “The nice thing about the MINTREX® sow program is that it works for everyone, no matter how big or how small.”

Randy Anderson interview wpx10-novus-randy.mp3

Novus VP for the Americas Dan Meagher is the guy on the right in the picture, helping to cut up and serve the Novus roasted pig at the expo. He says producers at the show this year were more optimistic than they have been in the past couple of years. “Attitudes are much better than they were last year, still cautiously optimistic, but certainly the outlook is brighter,” Dan told me. “People are conscious of having to manage the animal numbers but what they’re looking for now is how do I put a little bit more weight on and really take advantage of the markets that are out there.”

Dan also talked to me about Novus’ recent acquisitions of Albion and IQF-ENAMEX and how they have helped strengthen the company’s product lines and offerings for all types of livestock producers.

A hot topic at this year’s World Pork Expo was the pending free trade agreements that are awaiting Congressional approval. Don Butler, immediate past president of the National Pork Producers cited the agreements between the U.S. and Colombia, Panama and South Korea could make a world of difference for the pork industry in this country. In fact, Butler says the agreement with Korea, if approved, could add at least $10 a head to hog prices (compared to about a dollar or so the Colombian and Panamanian agreements would add). Download (mp3) Butler’s remarks about the agreements at World Pork expo – or listen in the player: wpx10-butlertrade.mp3

Later, during a stop at the media room, I was able to sit down with Jong Hyun Choi, the Minister to the U.S. for Economic Affairs in the South Korean Embassy in Washington, D.C. and get his thoughts on the pending agreement. He pointed out that the agreement were signed three years ago, but Congress has not given final approval to implement the provisions.

“It’s just about past time for the agreement to be ratified, approved by the U.S. Congress.”

He went on to say one of the main reasons for his visit is to promote the FTA and point out the huge benefits U.S. pork producers and South Korea could see once it is approved.

“Once this agreement is implemented, then the more than 20 percent tariffs (currently on U.S. pork) will be eliminated for frozen pork and within 10 years for fresh and chilled products. So, that implementation could provide a very commercially meaningful leg up for U.S. pork producers.”

Choi added that South Korea has just completed a free trade agreement with the European Union, while hog farmers in Chile have already been enjoying much lower tariffs for the past six years, increasing their market share in South Korea. That trend worries the NPPC, as Butler believes lack of ratification of the U.S.-Korea and other FTAs could end up shutting out American hog farmers from those markets in the next 10 years.

Choi agreed that Congress needs to get moving on this issue, and pork producing groups, such as the NPPC, will need to help push that.

Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) was proud to present some positive progress on the control and eradication of Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome (PRRS) at World Pork Expo last week.

First, they held a PRRS Area Regional Control workshop on Wednesday and Thursday that was for producers and veterinarians to find out what they can do to implement ARC. On Friday morning, they presented the “science behind the success” of the program for the media.

Dr. Scott Dee with with Swine Disease Eradication Center at the University of Minnesota says area regional control and elimination is on the move. “We had one example last year in Minnesota, but now we have 8-9 different parts of the United States and even a province in Canada that are trying this, seeing if they can reduce the level of infection in their area,” Scott said. “We’ve got to work together to see what we can do to put the damper on this devastating economic disease.”

Another important program to help control the disease is nicknamed PADRAP, the Production Animal Disease Risk Assessment Program. Dr. Dee says BIVI has helped with that by training students to go out and conduct detailed disease and biosecurity risk assessments on hog operations and so far nearly 2000 swine operations have been evaluated.

Dr. Jean Paul (JP) Cano recently joined BIVI as a professional services veterinarian after years in private practice and he says he is optimistic about the potential for controlling PRRS. “What it takes is collaboration and coordination between farms in the same area and sharing the risk of becoming infected,” he said. In addition to the biosecurity measures, JP says PRRS vaccination also plays a critical role in the control and eradication of the disease. “We think that vaccine is one more tool in the tool box that we have to fight this disease in the area regional control concept.”

AP – which offers a complete selection of swine production equipment including feeders and waters, ventilation and heating equipment, feed storage and delivery, flooring, confinement and more – has been dressing up their roasted pig for the crowd at WPX for the past four years. It takes about 10 hours to roast this porker to perfection after preparing it with apple juice and pineapple to make it as succulent as possible.

Jim Swisher (left) and his “hamigos” went all out with the Mexican theme and even had a pig pinata filled with treats for the kiddos. Check out the video to see what I mean.

The weather was crazy at World Pork Expo on Thursday, as a two hour torrential downpour at midday gave way to sunshine by the time the band took the stage and the roasted pigs were carved for the crowds.

Some time during the rain, general manager John Wrigley stopped by to visit with the folks at the Novus International tent and chatted with us for a while about how pleased he was with the attendance and to have international visitors back this year.

Last year, you may recall, we had a little thing called H1N1 that kept people from other countries from attending the event. “It was more than a little bit of a problem last year, there was no international attendance to speak of,” John said, but this year is back to normal. “We’ve got over 30 countries that people have registered for World Pork Expo from all over the world.”

Another difference from last year, according to John, is that the mood is a little more upbeat than the last two years. John says the producers who attend expo are a very knowledgeable group who are always looking to do more than fill their tote bags with pens and souvenirs. “The difference is this year they’ve got a smile on their face. There’s nothing like a little change in your pocket to change your attitude,” he said.

This will be John’s last year as general manager of the National Pork Producers Council event which is 22 years old. One of his most satisfying accomplishments during his nine year tenure is starting the Junior National Swine show, which has grown to a whopping 1700 pigs this year – a big jump from the 200 when that program was started seven years ago.
