AgWired RSS Trick

RSS FeedAlthough we have many people subscribing to the AgWired rss feed (http://feeds.feedburner.com/Agwired) what happens if you don’t want all our news? Wouldn’t it be cool if you could just subscribe to the content you’re most interested in?

Well you can. Here’s how:

Let’s say you work for an advertising agency and would just like to subscribe to news we give the Agency category to. That’s easy to find using our drop down menu of Categories which you’ll find in the left sidebar. The Agency category is this: http://agwired.com/category/agency/.

So to make that into a news feed (rss) that your news reader of choice will recognize, just add the word feed to the end of the url. There you go. A custom rss feed of all our agency categorized news. The url now looks like this: http://agwired.com/category/agency/feed.

This works for any of our categories and we’ve got 177 to choose from! So perhaps you’d like to just subscribe to news posts for John Deere, just add the word “feed” to that category url and here’s the url you use to subscribe with: http://agwired.com/category/john-deere/feed

Make sense? Easy isn’t it?

Let me add one more little item of trickery for you. Since you know we post so much audio and you may or may not want to listen to it on your computer how about if you create a podcast of our audio. Yes, you heard me right. Do the same thing I described above but use iTunes or some other podcatching software to subscribe. It will only search and pull from posts that have audio posted in them and by category or from our main rss feed, your choice. Try it. Then your iTunes will pull the audio into your computer and you can sync it to your iPod to listen to when and where you want.

Let me know if you have any problems. So for those of you who still aren’t using a news reader or subscribing to and listening to podcasts, here’s a few suggested links for you:

News Reader Software:

NewsGator – Has a web, PC, Mac and iPhone version and they all sync with each other. My favorite.
Internet Explorer – Yes your browser will do this for you. Here’s a How-To.
Firefox – Same goes for this browser.
Google Reader
Most email programs do this now to.

Podcast software:

iTunes – The best in my opinion and for either Mac or PC. Here’s a How-To.

Government RSS Feeds For Agriculture

USA.govI”m not sure how much ag news will be fed into USA.gov but they’re doing RSS feeds now powered by NewsGator. The release claims you can get a feed for Agriculture but it looks like it’s lumped in with Environment and Energy. However, you can find other specific agriculture feeds here.

The Federal government today announced the availability of breaking news and information RSS feeds on the award winning USA.gov website managed by the U.S. General Service Administration’s Office of Citizen Services. With a long history of providing electronic access to government information through the Web, the USA.gov site is delivering on a commitment to streamline and simplify access so that the public no longer has to scour a vast array of government sponsored websites to learn what is new in their areas of interest.

The new service (http://news.usa.gov/), powered by NewsGator, lets anyone subscribe to “really simple syndication” (RSS) feeds on USA.gov, the U.S. government’s official portal, and receive news and information in industry standard feed readers, many available for free, just as it is posted by editorial staff. Alternatively, web visitors can bookmark the Web site in their browser.

It’s also interesting to see that there is a USA.gov blog with a different blogger for each day of the week.

RSS is Simple, Really

Are you still one of those people who don’t understand what RSS is? Wonder no more. The people at Commoncraft have made understanding very easy (I think).

I have tried my best to describe this to many people and I find that it works best to show it in action, which I do in many of my workshops and presentations. These guys have put together a great video though and it’s worth watching even if you are a pro since you may find it helpful in trying to describe RSS to the un-enlightened.

RSS Feeds From NCGA

National Corn Growers AssociationThe National Corn Growers Association just announced that they are now using RSS to distribute information. Just use this link to subscribe like I did with my NewsGator Outlook plugin. Why don’t we see more of this? It’s good for getting information to members and the media. Sure, not all farmers know how to use RSS. Not all of them have a computer either. But a growing number of them do. I think NCGA’s timing is great with Commodity Classic coming up next week. I’m sure this will be a great mechanism to help keep us all informed.

NCGA RSS FeedBeginning today, you can enjoy the convenience of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) News of The Day coming to your personalized home page. NCGA now provides free RSS feeds, bringing the latest news, Ag Roundups and other information direct to your computer. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is an XML-based format for content distribution. RSS feeds are free content feeds from Web sites, such as www.ncga.com, that contain article headlines, summaries and links back to full-text articles on the Web.

RSS is an easy way for you to be alerted when content that interests you appears on the NCGA web site. Instead of visiting a particular Web site to browse for new articles and features, RSS automatically tells you when something new is posted on the site.

RSS Feeds From CHS

CHS, Inc.Although I usually get CHS news releases via email or the service they use to distribute them, now I’m going to get them directly via their new RSS feed. It’s part of their new media room on their website. I sure wish more companies would get with the program and invest a little into this. I’ll be glad to help if you’ve got questions.

The CHS MediaRoom, being launched in conjunction with the company’s upcoming annual meeting, includes up-to-date contact information, corporate background materials, fact sheets, executive and Board of Director bios and key press releases. On Thursday, Nov. 30 and Friday, Dec. 1, the CHS MediaRoom will also have available speeches and a link to a live web cast of the company’s annual meeting. Further, journalists can opt-in to receive email alerts on news from CHS and schedule an interview. In regards to the upcoming annual meeting, staff from each operating area, senior management and the Board of Directors will be available for interviews, primarily before and after the business meeting on Friday.

Good job Lani.

Colle+McVoy & New Holland On Adrants

It’s great to see agricultural advertising get noticed in the trade media. Take this post on Adrants. Steve noticed that New Holland is hip and that Colle+McVoy is responsible. You’ll be seeing just how hip, or should I say, “country,” New Holland is in coming days right here.

The Adrants post was for a series of print ads. You can view them from links on the blog post. BTW. I’m glad to see Colle+McVoy using an RSS feed on their website. I’m subscribed now so I can automatically get their agency news updates without using email!

New Outlook Version of NewsGator

NewsGatorI actively promote NewsGator as “the” news aggregator program you should use. For one thing it integrates right into Outlook and although the RSS feeds you subscribe to aren’t email, it allows you to view and handle them like email, including being able to forward a feed to someone as an email!

The online version of NewsGator is free. You create an account, subscribe to the feeds you want and then let NewsGator go retrieve them. With this version you have to visit the NewsGator website and log in to view and edit your feeds. This is why I like the (very low cost) Outlook version. I don’t have to go anywhere except my Outlook folder to see my feeds. The new version is NewsGator Outlook 2.5.

NewsGator IE MenuPlus I don’t have to cut and past the news feed url into the online edition, although it’s really not difficult. Here’s how you do it with the Outlook version. When you see the feed you want, you just right click and one of your choices is “Subscribe in NewsGator.” You click on it and you’re done. The feed is added and it checks for updates immediately.

Well now that you know my personal favorite, what’s yours and why? Feel free to post a comment on this or email me. Do you subscribe to RSS feeds? Are you using RSS?

Try RSS Feeds For Your E-Newsletter

I’m a fan of RSS as a web content distribution mechanism and know there’s a lot of interest in using it for things like company newsletters. Imagine how much money you could save if you didn’t print and mail a newsletter and your reader just subscribed to it from an RSS feed (.xml file) on your website? Since RSS doesn’t go through email your reader doesn’t have to be worried about getting spam or infected by a virus.

Although it’s a little dated a great article explaining RSS can be found at PC World.

I’ve been asked several times lately about how to use RSS for a paid subscription publication (e-newsletter). I’m still looking into this and don’t have an answer. Does anyone reading know? Is there a way to create an RSS feed that is password protected?
