  • Shady Dale Rodeo

This was one of my favorite photos from the Shady Dale Rodeo. I took an extra day before the start of the Corn Utilization and Technology Conference which starts tomorrow in Atlanta. It was a fun time with family and friends.

The Shady Dale Rodeo, now in it’s 27th year, is presented by Masonic Lodges Walton #200 and Jasper #50 of Jasper County. The Shady Dale Rodeo is a IPRA sanctioned professional rodeo event. It has been voted the Number One Outdoor Rodeo in the Southeast many times. The Shady Dale Rodeo is put on by an all volunteer crew of local Masons, Shriners, and other citizens of the surrounding area. In addition to the rodeo action you can enjoy a full line of concessions including pit cooked barbecue and fresh baked goods.

Of course I took more photos than this one and put them in a photo album. It was a Zimmerman family and friends day of horses, bbq and rodeo.

Wichita Riverfest to Celebrate the American Cowboy, Honor Troops

festibull Slip on your cowboy boots and slap on that cowboy hat. When May rolls around, there is only one place you’re going to want to be: the inaugural Festi-Bull Wichita Riverfest Bull Riding Event! Hosted by the Heritage Development Group, Inc. May 8-9, 2009 at the Cowtown Museum, this wild rodeo show is jam packed with exciting events to celebrate the rich traditions of the American cowboy.

The Festi-Bull will kick off with a bull riding invitational. 15 of the Midwest’s best bull riders will vie for the first-ever Festi-Bull belt buckle. Champion freestyle bull rider Jesse Schellhamer will be matching up with “Kill-o-byte,” the Pixius Communications challenge bull for a $1,500 prize. Schellhamer will be joined by champion freestyle bullfighter, Jeremy Muntz, who will be fighting a hot-blooded fighting bull with his championship freestyle bull fighting skills.

Following this crowd pleasing, man verses beast event, visitors will be dancing the night away to country-western music newcomer Randy Houser. He will entertain the crowd with his country radio hits, “Boots On” and “Anything Goes.” The Hattrick Country Band will also join Houser for a night of fun music and dancing.

The Festi-Bull will also show their patriotic colors in their support of the All American Beef Battalion (AABB). While Houser warms up for his evening performance, military men and women from the Ft. Riley Wounded Warrior Transitional Unit will be served a steak dinner sponsored by the AABB.

“The All American Beef Battalion is a truly respectable organization,” said Jesse Schellhamer, a PBR bull rider with $230,000 career earnings. “Any organization the takes steak as a donation and turns around and gives it to the troops needs to be supported both with time and money. The goal of the beef battalion is to serve those who have served us. It is the least we can do to support such an organization and the troops who have given so much.”

After an evening of fellowship in agriculture, the Festi-Bull adds to the fun with the Children’s Cowboy Camp. Kids of all ages can take part in agriculture activities including: horseshoe pitching, stick horse races, country tic-tac-toe, coloring contests, clogging, square dancing, line dancing, a petting zoo and more rodeo games.

310,000 people attend the Wichita Riverfest Event annually, and with the first-ever Festi-Bull scheduled, this year’s event will undoubtedly draw a big crowd. Don’t miss out on this grand slam country-western event! Celebrate agriculture, honor the troops and be a part of this magical event that takes pride in real American cowboys.

“One word: authentic; we are what we produce,” said Schellhamer. “There is no pretending. These are real bulls, real cowboys, real danger and real country music. We respect God, our country, the animals we ride and the people we do business with.”

Three Hills Rodeo Owner Dave Moorehead

Rory Meeks & Dave MooreheadThe main man for Three Hills Rodeo is owner, Dave Moorehead (right). He’s pictured here with bull fighter Rory Meeks.

Dave was on the scene at their rodeo last week in Green Bay, WI making sure everything was running smooth. I got to talk to him about his rodeo business before things got crazy. Dave says the rodeo grew out of a little rodeo show they put on at their home in Iowa and has turned into 80 percent of their business. The rest of his time is taken up farming and ranching.

You can learn more about his rodeo business in my interview. He says that when they put on a show like the one in Green Bay that they have to haul in over a million pounds of dirt and that’s where his New Holland equipment really comes into play.

    Rodeo Toughness on the ZimmCast

ZimmCast-113 - Rodeo is Tough EnoughI found out that I’m tough enough to wear pink last week. That’s because the Three Hills Rodeo I attended in Green Bay, WI held a Tough Enough to Wear Pink night on Friday to raise awareness for breast cancer. They tied this in with the Deanna Favre (Brett Favre’s wife) Foundation. So I got to wear a pink shirt to the rodeo that night.

Me Interviewing Steve GanderThis week on the ZimmCast you get to learn a little bit about rodeo, especially indoor traveling rodeo. First up in the program is an interview with Steve Gander. He started the World’s Toughest Rodeo and after selling the business he still stays involved with the marketing side of things.

Me Interviewing Marla MooreheadSteve sold his business to Dave and Marla Moorehead. The program also contains an interview with Marla who talks about the causes they support and how they set things up with local media in Green Bay. Marla says that they split their time between rodeo and farming since they have a large beef cattle operation in Iowa where they’re based.

I was in Green Bay attending the rodeo to actually follow around country music star, Michael Peterson, for New Holland who sponsored my trip.

    Interview With Col. Jill Chambers

Col. Jill ChambersAdministering the Army Oath to a batch of recruits on Friday evening at the Three Hills Rodeo was Col. Jill Chambers. Jill is the director of protocol for General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I had met Jill last year at the New Holland/Michael Peterson Celebrity Tractor Race in Nashville. It was good seeing her again, especially as she led the recruits in the oath. In an interview I did with her she explains what that the oath means.

Jill says she’s going to be working with Michael on an “Answer The Call” tour starting next January.

Michael made our interview a challenge, at least at the beginning as you’ll hear.

Here’s my interview with Col. Jill Chambers:

    Michael Sings The National Anthem

Michael Sings the National AnthemI think singing the National Anthem is one way of judging someone’s voice.

Have you ever noticed that or is it just me?

After the army recruit swearing in ceremony Michael Peterson sang the Anthem and showed that he’s got a great voice. This recording is from the control board next to the announcer so you can hear the producers in the background a little bit.

I hope you’ll enjoy it like I do. I can’t hear our country’s National Anthem without getting choked up. I don’t know about you.

    Here’s Michael singing the Anthem:

    New Army Recruits

Army Swearing in CeremonyOne of the highlights of the Three Hills Rodeo in Green Bay was the swearing in of a fresh young batch of high school senior army recruits. On hand to do the honors was Col. Jill Chambers.

You can see her in front of the recruits, leading them in the oath. Standing out in front of them is Michael Peterson who is ready to sing the National Anthem.

You can hear the Col. Chambers lead the oath:

If you would like to watch the whole ceremony I’ve got it on YouTube now. It’s just over 8 minutes long including Michael singing the National Anthem.

A Day With Michael Peterson Photo Album

Michael & Tacey PetersonProbably the best way to get an idea of what a day following Michael Peterson around is like is to watch the pictures I took today as a slide show. You can find them in the Zimmages section in the upper right side of the page or you can visit my online Flickr photo album which has 294 pictures from today.

Michael’s wife Tacey joined us this afternoon. Here she and Michael are enjoying the Three Hills Rodeo which is just concluding.

You can find the photos here: Three Rivers Rodeo Photo Album

I’ve got a lot more to post but it’s late and I’m heading home early in the morning. Look for more in the next day or so.

On YouTube We’re Live on the Radio

Y-100 ShowI told you we had fun in the Y-100 studio this morning. Talking with the Bear & Charli. This is Charli in the middle with Michael Peterson (left) and BJ Schumacher (right).

I shot a video clip while they were in one live segment and got it uploaded to YouTube this afternoon. I’m using a new camera and had to download and install a couple of things to get it formatted correctly. Just adding to my toolbox you know.

So here’s the video. You can find it on YouTube here.

I’m going to have more coverage for you either later tonight or over the weekend. I’m getting ready to head on out for the evening’s rodeo and have no idea when I’ll be back in front of the computer. See you then

B J Schumacher is World Bull Riding Champion

BJ SchumacherWhen is gets down to it, someone has to ride the bulls and the broncs in a rodeo. One of the best, actually the best, is BJ Schumacher.

BJ is currently the world champion bull rider and we’ll see him in action tonight at the Three Hills Rodeo here in Green Bay, WI.

I talked to BJ about how and why he got involved with rodeo. He started at about 9 years old and learned it all from “the old man.” He says you just have to accept the fact that you’re going to get hurt too.

Here’s my interview with BJ Schumacher:

Thanks to Gene Hemphill for taking some pics of me, for me.

    Bull Fighter Rory Meeks

Rory Meeks - Rodeo Clown & Bull FighterIt takes a lot of guts or something else to be a good Bull Fighter or Rodeo Clown.

A rodeo clown or bull fighter is a rodeo performer who works on bull riding contests. His primary job is to protect the rider from the bull after he dismounts or is bucked off, by distracting the bull and providing alternative targets for the bull to chase.

Rory Meeks here has a lot of whatever that is and we’ll get to see him help out some bull riders here at the Three Hills Rodeo tonight.

Rory says he played high school in college and that getting run over by a bull isn’t much different than getting run over by a big linebacker. You can learn more about Rory and what he does for a living in my interview with him.

Here’s my interview with Rory Meeks:

Michael on With The Bear & Charli

Michael Peterson live radioAfter the tv interviews this morning we headed on over to WYNC for a couple of live segments with Bear & Charli.

Michael is sitting in the Y-100 studio and talking about his New Holland, Down on the Farm CD and the great causes we’re supporting through the rodeo entertainment venue.

The Bear and Charli were a lot of fun. I hope they come on out to the performance tonight.

    Michael Peterson TV Interviews

Michael Peterson with CBS AffiliateIn the early hours this morning Michael Peterson did live shots with the local CBS affiliate.

In this one he ended the segment with a live song on his guitar. We’re going to get to hear Michael sing the national anthem tonight to start the Three Hills Rodeo. He’s also going to be doing a special performance with the Army and I’ll have more on that later.

It was fun watching these reporters (hey I’m one too) at work. I didn’t get their names. This one did one of her live segments while sitting on top of a live bull in a chute. That took some guts and you could tell by listening to her afterward that it got her adrenaline pumping.

    A Day With Michael Peterson

Michael Peterson with NBC AffiliateA day in the life of country music star Michael Peterson. Sounds like a book or a movie. Actually, it’s the theme of my posts here in Green Bay, WI at the Three Hills Rodeo.

This morning we started out at 6am with live spots on local tv and radio stations. Here’s Michael being interviewed by the local NBC affiliate.

We’re standing in the rodeo arena, on the floor. I was very much hoping the bulls they had out for this stayed tucked away safely in their chutes.

Michael Peterson is Ready for Some Rodeo

Me interviewing Michael PetersonHello from Green Bay, WI, the site of the Three Hills Rodeo which will kick off this evening in the Resch Arena. I’m here documenting a day with Michael Peterson which started out very early this morning.

I interviewed him early to get a perspective on what all’s going on. He’s here to watch some young people get sworn in to the army and to help raise support for breast cancer awareness and the Deanna Favre Foundation. This is part of the Dodge Bulls & Broncs Outlaws of Rodeo Tour.

    Here’s my interview with Michael:

    Rodeo Blogging in Green Bay

Three Hills RodeoAs I was driving to a client presentation today I received a phone call from another client and tomorrow I’m headed to Green Bay, WI for the Three Hills Rodeo. This is going to be fun. For one thing, I haven’t been to a rodeo for a while. For another, I’ll be shooting some more video to play around with on my Mac afterward.

The client is New Holland which is a rodeo sponsor and Michael Peterson will be kicking things off. I’ll have a lot more for you starting on Friday and over the weekend.

New Holland Helps Open Chutes for Rodeo Action!

Three Hills RodeoAs the Official 2007 Sponsor of Three Hills Rodeo, Inc. New Holland will help behind the scenes at events as a New Holland TM145 will be grooming the arena at our events. While the new Skid Steer is on the road, a New Holland TM145 tractor will be servicing the livestock needs on the ranch in Iowa. Gene Hemphill, of New Holland, has also helped bring a great attraction to the Front End of the Three Hills Production. Michael Peterson, Country Music Recording Artist and New Holland Spokesman will be performing at Green Bay Bulls and Broncs Event. We hope to see him at other events down the rodeo trail!!!

Yes sir. This should be a fun event to blog about.
