7R Series Tractors Unveiled by John Deere

With a focus on increased power, versatility, capacity and improved operator comfort, John Deere introduces the 7R Series Tractors for the 2011-2012 season. These completely new row-crop tractor models have many of the performance features found in the larger 8R Series, making them even more productive in the field.

The 7R Series Tractors come with a wide array of new customer-driven features including the new IVT and Command Quad transmissions, options for larger tires, compact chassis, and greater engine horsepower ratings. These features give the 7R Tractors the versatility to handle the tillage, planting, haying, loader work and many other tough chores on the farm.

The 7R Tractors have 30 percent more fuel capacity and 23 percent greater hitch-lift capacity compared to their large-frame 7030 series predecessors. For rear-driven equipment, a new 3-speed economy PTO with power-assist PTO shifting is an available fuel-saving option. Inside the cab, John Deere has made major changes to enhance the operating experience.

The 7R models also can be equipped with ActiveCommand Steering, which utilizes breakthroughs in steering technology to deliver the ultimate in precise steering control, especially at transport speeds.

Customer Videos From John Deere Drive Green Challenge

You’ve probably wondered what I was doing at various John Deere dealers this past couple months. Well, now you can see it in action. It is a series of customer video clips for the John Deere Drive Green Challenge promotion that is taking place around the country.

John Deere selected several dealership promotion days and I showed up to collect some video and ask them what they thought about the new compact and subcompact tractors they drove. It has been a very enjoyable experience because I got to meet some very interesting people.

If you’re interested to see if a John Deere Drive Green Challenge event is coming to your area you can search on the Dealer Events Map.

Drive Green Challenge at Hudson River Tractor

It’s Drive Green Challenge time again this weekend. Today I’m in Clifton Park, NY visiting with Hudson River Tractor Company. I spoke with one of the owners, Tory Northrop, who gave me some background on how the company came together. He’s in the group photo of the family members out here for today’s event.

Tory says the merger that made what is now Hudson River Tractor Company happened in 2005. They serve a combined ag/consumer market with consumer now counting for over half of their business. The territory includes the Albany, NY metro area, northern New York City area and Chatham area. He says the Drive Green Challenge helps bring a lot more attention to all the products that John Deere offers and is a big draw. He says compact tractors and anything to do with improving their landscape seems to be of high interest right now. You can listen to my interview with Tory here: Tory Northrop Interview

You can see photos from the event in the Hudson River Drive Green Challenge Photo Album.

Driving Green at GreenSouth

I was driving green with John Deere in Gainesville, FL this weekend. GreenSouth Equipment held a field party for customers and the public as part of the Drive Green Challenge tour.

One of the stars of the tour is the truck that travels across the country delivering some of the equipment that is displayed at scheduled events. I met this year’s driver, Brian Middleton, who has already been to more than 20 stops with a lot more to go. As you might imagine, he’s got some great anecdotes about driving this highway billboard: Interview with Brian Middleton

John Deere Unlocks Augmented Reality

Want an early preview of the John Deere 7R Tractor? Then visit the John Deere Unlock website.

As part of its launch of new large agricultural equipment for 2011, John Deere has created an innovative, interactive new website – johndeere.com/unlock – to give growers an early preview of the new John Deere 7R Tractor, combines and other new equipment for 2011.

The Unlock website features regularly updated webisodes depicting key features of the new 7R Tractor and combines over the next several months. The first webisode introduces the Guetterman farm family of eastern Kansas and the features they look for in a new row-crop tractor. Another highlight of the website will be the augmented reality program that allows viewers to sync with a webcam to have the equipment come to life with animation and sound on their computer.

According to David Pauli, John Deere advertising manager for large ag equipment, the website is intended to help generate excitement for the new products in a way that gives viewers a highly informative experience. “We wanted to create a continually fresh, novel platform that is entertaining and gives growers unique insight into our new equipment over several months leading up to launch. Every week they’ll get a chance to see something new and different about the products.”

The Unlock website will host information on the new John Deere 7R Series Tractors, combines and other equipment that will be introduced later this summer.

For an early inside look at this new equipment, visit www.JohnDeere.com/unlock.

I’m glad to see that the video is also being posted to the John Deere YouTube channel! I’ll be interested to see how this “augmented reality” program works when ready.

Ag Pro Companies Drive Green Challenge

My latest stop for the John Deere Drive Green Challenge is Little Rock, AR with Ag Pro Companies. We set up at The Ranch, which provided a great driving ground for customers who wanted to try out some new John Deere tractors or Gators or mowers. Customers were able to do a comparison test with a Kubota too!

During my time here I recorded some excellent customer testimonials for publication on the John Deere Drive Green Challenge website. I also took a lot of photos. Next stop will be Gainesville, FL following the 2011 Agri-Marketing Conference.

Ag Council Board Members Speak Out at Ag Day

Barry NelsonDuring National Ag Day activities I visited with some big time supporters who are urging other companies and organizations to get involved. I’m going to share their thoughts with you here starting with Barry Nelson, John Deere, who is serving as Secretary/Treasurer for the Agriculture Council of America (pictured center). John Deere is one of the partner sponsors of Ag Day. Barry says they’ve been having Ag Day activities in Washington, DC since 1973 and have developed a pretty good brand. He says the job of the board of ACA is to plan what they’re going to do for the next Ag Day. In addition to the events in Washington, DC they also supply materials and support for other Ag Day events around the country via the website. He also makes a point that this is one day out of the year when everyone can get together to support the industry even if their competitors.

You can listen to my interview with Barry here: Barry Nelson Interview

Kent SchesckeAlso serving on the board of the Agriculture Council of America is Kent Schescke, National FFA. He says that FFA has been involved for years as a sponsor and by having students participate as student advocates. They spent Monday at the 4H Center getting some preparation for visiting with legislators to talk about agriculture. He says that building good leadership skills goes hand in hand with good advocacy skills.

You can listen to my interview with Kent here: Kent Schescke Interview

Colin WoodallThe newest member of the board of the Agriculture Council of America is Colin Woodall, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (pictured on the right). Colin says there are two things that really prompted NCBA to become involved as a sponsor of Ag Day. One is the ability to use Ag Day as a mechanism to reconnect with the American consumer. The second thing is getting young people involved and Ag Day spends a lot of time getting that done. He says that these things are extremely important. Like Barry and Kent, he encourages more companies and organizations to get involved.

You can listen to my interview with Colin here: Colin Woodall Interview

Another board member of the Agriculture Council of America is Tamara Freund Kass, DTN/The Progressive Farmer. The company is also a partner sponsor of Ag Day. Tamara says she got nominated to the board by Barry. She says the board had a great meeting prior to the banquet and discussed how they can continue to get more people involved in Ag Day. She also makes a point of how this celebration of agriculture is an opportunity for varied industry interests to come together in a united way.

Coufal-Prater Equipment Shows Green

Spending a day at a farm implement dealership is not only fun when you can drive brand new equipment but also an education. It’s also a way to get to meet new farm friends too!

That’s what I did earlier this week at Coufal-Prater Equipment’s John Deere Day which was held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, TX. Pictured on the right is Tim Prater talking with one of his customers who came out to see new utility tractors and sub-compact tractors. Behind them is a new John Deere Gator XUV which is going to be given away at the end of this year’s Drive Green Challenge tour. You can see a lot of photos from the event in an online photo album.

Tim says Coufal-Prater Equipment is a five store operation that covers most of mid central Texas. He loves to have the John Deere Drive Green Challenge tour stop by since it adds excitement to a local promotion and brings in representatives who can interact on the lot with people who have questions. The day was divided into two parts with commercial operators in the morning and the landowners in the afternoon.

Driving Green With John Deere

It has been a while since I got to Drive Green with John Deere. However, today I’m on location at Coufal-Prater Equipment in Round Rock, TX. It is a beautiful day.

Over the next couple months I’ll be out on location capturing some of the customer experience in photos and video. All will be submitted to the company for use on their Drive Green website. I’ve spoken with a few customers already and they are definitely enjoying the opportunity to ride and drive new tractors, Gators and mowers.

John Deere Active Command Steering

Matt ArnoldActive Command Steering was one of the new things getting a lot of attention at the National Farm Machinery Show. These young guys were working on one of the simulators that were set up so attendees could get a real sense of how it works.

I spoke with Matt Arnold, Senior Marketing Representative, about the new product. He says it’s an option on the Model Year 2011 8R Series tractors. It’s a smart steering system that’s speed compensated. It adjusts the lock to lock ratio of the steering wheel as well as the effort. You can hear Matt explain how it works in my interview with him.

By the way there’s an 8R Active Command Steering Game waiting for you to try out. You can find it with this link.

John Deere Launches 1 Series Subcompact Utility Tractors

John Deere Subcompact 1 SeriesAt the National Farm Machinery Show John Deere unveiled a new line of subcompact tractors – the 1 Series Subcompact Utility tractors. The media got a preview before the show opened one morning. You can see the presentation by Kevin Branstetter, John Deere Product Manager, in the video clip below. I also interviewed Kevin.

Kevin says their are two models, the 1023E and 1026R. He says they’re customer designed and will accept a full range of implements. One of those is a mid mount mower deck that allows the operator to drive over it and auto connect! Also important is an auxiliary power outlet so you can keep your mobile phone charged while you’re mowing or working. They’ll be available in John Deere dealers soon.

March 15 is National Ag Day

National Agriculture DayThis year marks the 38th anniversary of National Ag Day on March 15, an event which will be celebrated in classrooms and communities across the country as well as in the nation’s Capitol.

The Agriculture Council of America (ACA) has three major Washington DC events planned this year – Coffee with the Secretary, the Mix-and-Mingle Luncheon, and the National Celebration of Agriculture Dinner. John Deere will once again partner with ACA, as well as Successful Farming and DTN-The Progressive Farmer, to sponsor the DC events.

The events honor National Agriculture Week and mark a nationwide effort to tell the true story of American agriculture and remind citizens that agriculture is a part of all of us. A number of producers, agricultural associations, corporations, students and government organizations involved in agriculture are expected to participate.

In addition to public service announcements and other educational programs, ACA and partners will sponsor students to attend the Washington D.C. events. Representatives from FFA, 4H, AFA, the Consortium, and Student NAMA will visit with legislators, participate in a mix-and-mingle luncheon, and attend special events throughout the day.

The winners of the National Ag Day Essay Contest will also attend the events. High school students around the country have submitted written or video essays about the importance of agriculture with the theme “American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.” One winner in each category – written and video – will receive $1,000 and round-trip airfare to Washington, D.C., for recognition during the Celebration of Ag Dinner. The Ag Day Essay Contest is sponsored by CHS Inc., the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, High Plains/Midwest Ag Journal, National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB), National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA), Country Living Association and McCormick Company.

New Precision Products From John Deere

When it comes to what’s new with John Deere Dan Hawkins (pictured on right) was ready, willing and able talk about them at the recent NAFB convention Trade Talk Session. Dan works in the Ag Management Solutions group. He says that John Deere brought three main products to market this year that include JD Link, GreenStar 3 display and StarFire 3000 receiver.

The new JD Link is a wireless communication and information solution for John Deere tractors and self-propelled forage harvesters. It helps you keep tabs on each machine in your operation and makes remote, automated equipment management a reality.

Reining Lesson Couresy of John Deere At WEG

Visitors to The John Deere Place at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are treated to scheduled reining demonstrations each day. This week the media had their own opportunity that included being able to sign up to try it yourself. Although I do enjoy riding occasionally I stayed on the ground with my camera and took a picture of Sarah Jenkins, Horse & Hound magazine, getting a lesson from the experts.

Sarah says she had never ridden in a western saddle before and she was surprised at how easy it was. Part of that was being on a well trained horse too I’m sure. Sarah says she’s in “horse heaven” here at the WEG. You can listen to my interview with Sarah: Sarah Jenkins Interview

Full Line of John Deere Equipment on Display at WEG

You might think that an equipment company exhibiting at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games would only display equipment to use on horse farms. You might think wrong. In fact, WEG sponsor, John Deere, is displaying their full line of equipment from consumer to ag to commercial.

Earlier this week I spoke with Barry Nelson, Manager, Media Relations, about what the company is displaying and why. He says “this is a branding effort” and therefore they wanted a full range of their equipment to show the extent of the brand. There are 40 pieces of equipment on display and 60 Gators “running around the grounds” as well as some other tractors and implements being used in the arenas. This is a very international crowd attending the grounds and the company has someone on location who is multi-lingual even though many of the visitors do speak English. Andre Pater and John Deere Support Race For Education

Polish born artist Andre Pater was on hand at the John Deere media reception at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. He was signing prints of one of his four paintings that he produced for the Race For Education. You can purchase one of them online.

I spoke with him about his work and support for the Race For Education. He has lived in the Lexington area for over 20 years. He says it’s like living in Heaven. He loves the idea behind the Race For Education and was happy to help them by creating art work of the major competitions at the WEG: reining, dressage, jumping and driving. You can listen to my interview with Andre: Andre Pater Interview

The Race For Education (RFE) is a national 501(c)(3) scholarship organization, that enables young people of equine industry families as well as those who want to pursue an equine-related or agricultural career, both with significant financial need, to obtain a college degree by providing tuition support; financial literacy training to help students minimize their debt load; mentoring services to provide students with emotional support; and permanent jobs upon graduation.

John Deere Has Their Place At World Equestrian Games

The John Deere Place at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games is a very impressive building and exhibit with a path through it containing a wide array of products. It sits on the walkway between the main entrance to the main outdoor stadium.

To find out what John Deere is doing at the Games and why they got involved I spoke with Roch Dold. He works with the various equine associations that John Deere has a relationship with. He says that because of those relationships they were approached early on to see if they would participate. It’s a natural fit when you consider the history of the John Deere company. As Roch puts it, “the horse and John Deere have a rich tradition.”

The company has a very diverse display of equipment that even includes construction equipment. Roch says that there is a diverse international audience and this allows them to see all that the brand has to offer. Besides the display they are also the official equipment supplier to the Games and you’ll see green equipment working all over the grounds.
