AgWeb Launches Mobile App

Now there’s an app for AgWeb. Farm Journal Media just announced the launch of their mobile app.

“Our online user base—the largest web audience in agriculture—repeatedly turns to AgWeb for current market information, agriculture news and online tools and databases. The new mobile app will help keep growers connected to AgWeb from their mobile phones or tablets, even when they are in the field or on the road,” said Greg Vincent, AgWeb Editor.

Vincent anticipates that two of the most popular features of the new app will be its weather and markets sections. Users can get current local weather conditions, 12-hour weather history and forecasts, precipitation, wind forecasts and a seven-day forecast. The weather radar can also be expanded to show weather activity down to the road level, allowing farmers to see if they are getting rain on a particular field.

The new app is free to download, and available through iTunes and Android app stores for use on iPhones and Android mobile devices.

Don’t forget to include the AgWired app on your smartphone too. :)

Mobile Technology In Dairy Industry

Mobile app technology is growing fast in the ag industry. Even the dairy sector is seeing more and more of it. Take Select Sires which took their Select Detect activity monitoring system to a new level this year when they introduced the mobile optimized version at World Dairy Expo. I spoke with King Smith to learn more about it. In the photo he’s showing the new mobile app on an iPad.

This new mobile application allows dairy producers to access cow records from the barn, from the field or when they are on the go.

The mobile Select Detect application is optimized for iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad® and Android™-based phones. It allows for a quick remote review of cows on the high activity list, low activity list and heat expectancy list. Both daily and hourly activity charts can be viewed to determine if and when A.I. should be performed. This removes the need for dairy producers to be in the office to review the software and allows for a quick snapshot of activity that is updated every hour.

Initial iOS 5 Thoughts

I’ve already been getting questions about Apple new mobile operating system, iOS 5. That’s what happens when you tweet that you’ve got it!

Like many people yesterday, I was frustrated getting the update on my iPhone 4. It took about 2 hours to get it downloaded and then I couldn’t get the update installed due to Apple server overload. So I waited until this morning and then had no problem.

Here are a couple of initial thoughts for you:

1. I really like the changes in the camera functions. Now you can crop, enhance and Tweet, all built in. The photo here is one I took and did all three functions while out jogging on the Katy Trail (I stopped for a few seconds :) ) a while ago. Click on the photo for a larger version. When the phone is asleep you can just double click the home button, click the camera icon that now appears and you’re ready to shoot. No waking the phone up, finding and opening the camera app. The volume up control now lets you snap the shutter too which is a big help.

2. I was very confused about where my music went since there is no longer an iPod app. There is now one called Music instead. It only has your music. Videos have been moved to the Videos app. Makes sense and I breathed a sigh of relief. At first I thought it might have had something to do with the whole iCloud thing and music that you purchased through iTunes. The majority of music in on my computer came from CD’s that I own.

Other than that about all I can add right now is that there have been a lot of app updates. Getting those and updating them via iTunes took quite a while this morning. I know this isn’t a lot of information but those are just a few initial observations.

Tomorrow I am supposed to get my new iPhone 4S. After I get that set up I’ll share more.

Hoosier Ag Today App

Here’s a new app for your phone. The Hoosier Ag Today app was just announced. I’ve got it on my HTC Thunderbolt.

This free application provides farmers with up-to-the-minute market prices, time-sensitive news, and an exclusive Indiana agricultural weather forecast. But what makes the HAT app unique is that farmers can listen to exclusive audio content on their wireless devices. “This is in-depth information that is too long for today’s commercial radio formats but the kind of detail that today’s farmers crave,” said Gary Truitt, president of Hoosier Ag Today. The HAT app is currently available on the Android platform with an iPhone version ready for release in a few weeks.

The app was developed in collaboration with LoadOut Technologies at the Purdue University Research Park. A development team with experience in app creation and agriculture worked to create an application that meets the unique informational needs of the agricultural industry. This is a prototype of an app that will be developed for other farm media organizations across the Midwest. The app takes advantage of the time-sensitive and localized information that statewide farm broadcast organizations can provide, while delivery that information directly to farmers while they are in the field or on the go. Sunbelt Know On The Go App

Joining the ranks of farm shows with an app is the Sunbelt Ag Expo. It’s the Know On The Go app for all your mobile device types. It’s on my iPhone already because I’ll be there next week thanks to the support of the New Holland Boomer 555 Contest!

“Know on the Go” is the official mobile app for the 2011 Sunbelt Ag Expo, to be held Oct. 18-20 at Spence Field in Moultrie, Ga. The Sunbelt Expo is a must-attend event for anyone in agriculture, featuring hundreds of exhibits, a working farm, equipment demonstrations and driving ranges, and various educational opportunities.

“Know on the Go,” provided for the first time by Farm Press Publications and Penton Media Inc., will allow those attending the Sunbelt Expo this year to use their iPhone, IPod Touch, iPad, Blackberry, Android and other web-enabled phones to receive up-to-the-minute news alerts and other breaking information during the three-day show.

“The Sunbelt Expo: Know on the Go mobile app was developed by Penton Custom Media and has been used at some of the largest trade shows in the nation,” says Greg Frey, vice president at Penton Media and publisher of Farm Press. “We believe this new technology will greatly enhance participants’ experience at this year’s Sunbelt Ag Expo.”

Soil Sampling With An iPad

ZimmCast 312Precision Earth. Has a nice ring to it doesn’t it. Would you guess it’s an iPad app for soil sampling? Didn’t think so. At the 2011 InfoAg Conference I learned about it when I saw their booth in the trade show.

Pictured are Chris Tucker (left), Precision Earth and Aaron Hutchinson, Cogent3D, Inc. holding an iPad showing Precision Earth in action. I visited with Chris to learn more about how this application got started. Chris has been a diehard Microsoft guy who got his first iPhone last year. He’s been in the precision ag industry for a long time. The iPhone “opened his eyes” that it could be used as a data collection device. He sees lots of farmers carrying them around. So he got started working with Aaron’s company to develop what is now Precision Earth. He sees it evolving beyond just soil sampling to a full fledged crop scouting device. The app uses shapefiles which can be managed by iTunes or a local computer app they can provide. The feedback that Chris received at the InfoAg Conference was far more positive than he even hoped for. That’s a good sign. There are plans to utilize other mobile platforms in the future.

Precision Earth should be available in the iTunes Store soon. It will also work on an iPhone!

InfoAg 2011 Conference App

This is the newest app on my iPhone and will be on my Android phone later this morning. It’s the InfoAg 2011 Conference app.

The InfoAg 2011 Conference, hosted at Springfield Illinois’ Crowne Plaza, from July 12-14th, is pleased to add a digital Conference Companion available exclusively for the InfoAg 2011 exhibitors and attendees. Designed to supplement the online conference program, this app allows its user to view an at-a-glance program, search speakers, exhibitors, and presentation synopses, as well as create a personalized conference itinerary.

As you can see from this screenshot I’ll be on the program talking about social media. Our moderator for that session is Paul Schrimpf, Group Editor, Croflife Media Group. Also in our session will be Jeremy Wilson, Technology Specialist, Crop IMS. Our session will be offered twice next Thursday. Hope you can make it.

The app is the creation of Quentin Rund, PAQ Interactive. Get it and let him know what you think. I think this is going to become a standard offering of shows of all kinds, farm included. Kind of like the “old” conference brochure but much easier to use and carry around!

Online Version of Precision Laboratories Mix Tank App

Now you can get the Precision Laboratories Mix Tank App without having to have a smart phone handy. Now you can “get it” from your online computer or tablet! Give it a try.

Precision Laboratories recently announced the release of an online version of its popular, new Mix Tank app for iPhone. Thousands of growers and retailers have already downloaded the app and are using it to prevent costly mixing sequence errors that lead to compatibility problems and nozzle plugging. Now, Precision Laboratories is able to offer the app to anyone with a computer and internet access.

Like the iPhone and iPod touch app, applicators can now choose from over 900 crop protection products from over 16 different manufacturers at www.mixtankapp.com. The Mix Tank app is able to process any combination of products and determine the correct mixing sequence. Users can also share their recommended mixing orders through email, Facebook or Twitter and can request the addition of any crop protection product not currently in the database.

The Mix Tank App is free of charge both online and on the iPhone. The iPhone app also features a series of training videos on proper mixing sequence from the adjuvant experts at Precision Laboratories, which can be viewed at www.youtube.com/mixtankapp.

The first of its kind, the Mix Tank App helps growers get the most out of every tank mix. Users can access the online app from any internet-connected computer at www.mixtankapp.com.

Alltech Gets New Media

ZimmCast 306This week’s program features a conversation I had at last week’s Alltech International Symposium with Billy Frey, Digita Marketing Manager. Billy was on the program with a session titled, “Precision Marketing: Don’t “get what you pay for,” only pay for what you get. His session was part of a new educational track called the New Ag Network. This track was created to take a holistic approach to business and marketing. The symposium still has species targeted educational tracks. His session was part of an effort to provide attendees with tools to do better marketing of their business.

Of course we talk about social media mechanisms since they now allow companies like Alltech to do their own branding without being completely dependent on traditional media channels. Billy says his number one message is “we have to listen to the customer.” These new tools that allow companies to engage with their customers make that easier than ever. At the same time they allow for very targeted and streamlined advertising efforts. There are ag media representatives from many countries that attend the Alltech Symposium. I asked him if he thought they are “getting it” when it comes to social media. He thinks they are or that they are at least in the process of making changes necessary to survive in the new media world. He’s proud of the ag media for embracing new media. In the photo Billy (left) is chatting with Dave Russell, Brownfield Ag News in the Symposium press room.

Billy thinks that the new media mechanisms provide an opportunity and a challenge since the younger generations are starting out with them while the older generations are only just coming around to accepting them. He echoes a belief I’ve had since we got into new media and that is that it’s just an evolution of the best form of marketing – word of mouth.

We also talk about the new Alltech App which currently provides unique information for pork producers and markets and weather. Basically, this means that Alltech has created their own information channel for their customers who can choose to get it and use it how and where they want.

WillowTree Makes Mobile Beautiful

ZimmCast 301Mobile apps are where it’s at. That’s kind of the theme of this week’s program. I’ve been asked many times who developed the AgWired App? The answer is WillowTree Apps. In this week’s program you can listen to my conversation with Tobias Dengel, CEO.

Tobias says the company was started in 2007 by Michael Prichard and has grown significantly. That’s because they say, “We Make Mobile Beautiful.” They also make it functional and just plain rock solid. WillowTree built one of the first iPhone apps and they’ve had several featured in Apple advertising and even in by Steve Jobs in the iPad 2 launch!

Besides talking about WillowTree Apps we also discuss considerations for creating a mobile app and the growing need to make sure your own website is mobile enabled. AgWired has been mobile enabled for years and I’ve had lots of positive feedback on it so I know how important this is becoming. So if you’re interested in mobile app development I really think you need to give Tobias or Michael a call. Just tell ‘em Chuck sent you. The company has already published over 70 apps and they do work for iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows Mobile 7, Blackberry and Web apps/optimization. Follow their blog, The WillowTree Wire, or follow them on Twitter.

AgWired App Now In Android Market

The AgWired App is now available in the Android Market. You asked for it and you’ve got it. One of the new features we’re offering in this app (and soon to be added to the iPhone version) is the ability to share out stories via multiple mechanism like email, Twitter, etc. The first person to download the AgWired Android App to his phone was Deron Johnson, Rhea & Kaiser (AgWired sponsor), just prior to the student activities at the Agri-Marketing Conference.

Just like its iPhone predecessor, the app offers one-touch access to all the latest news and information in the agribusiness and agricultural marketing world posted on Agwired.com, including audio, photos and video, and connections to other ZimmComm news sites. The AgWired App features a news tab drop down menu to select ZimmComm News Network feeds as well as individual news on AgWired.com by category.

You can find the AgWired App in the Android Market with this link. The AgWired iPhone App has been downloaded onto almost 3,000 iPhones/iPod touches/iPads since we introduced it and is being opened for viewing between 3 to 5 times per day, showing a high level of use by those who have it.

I’ve been asked who we worked with to develop the AgWired App and will point you to rock solid mobile app developer WillowTree Apps.

App sponsors are being sought. Contact ZimmComm for more information, including rates. First time and early sponsor discounts available.
